Eye mucus color? Hello, all. I was wondering what color your yorkie's eye mucus is. My baby is 3 months old and I was wiping the mucus from his eyes this morning and noticed it was a pinkish/redish color. I think it has been that way and it never occured to me that mucus is supposed to be white! But, today I thought about it and was like, hmmm, this is odd. I called the vet to make an appointment but I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you! |
It SHOULD be clear - do you think there was dust or clay in his eyes ?? (in texas we have red clay in many area's...) it shouldn't be any color but clear - green is infection.. but I wouldn't know what rust color means and would check with your vet..... |
I know! And I'm worried that I may have left it for too long. I hope not. For some reason it just didin't hit me that there could be something wrong. :( I'm usually the type to call the vet for EVERY little thing I notice and see, but I don't know what happened this time around. But, the lady at the vet told me it could possibly be an eye infection but she wasn't sure so I should come in. I don't have red clay around my area, but it may be dust. I usually sweep and all pretty often, especially since I've gotten Howie, but sometimes he'll crawl under the bed and I'm sure dust builds there. My poor thing; I hope he'll be okay. |
Maltese have tear stains that are red/pink. So do many yorkies, they just don't stand out with the colors of their coat. Perhaps this is what you saw? If the tears stains are red, perhaps the gook was build up of them. HTH |
Mine has pinkist/red |
TJ and Roxy both have redish tears and red globs. and sometimes it is clear. I try to keep that hair cut real short b/c it can really accumulate and cause sores. I too asked the Vet about it. He said not to worry, that they probably have allergies that's why they are tearing so much and/or it is just the way the shape of their eyes and tear ducts are that cause the build up. Just try to keep them clean, b/c the wet hair can cause sores. |
pinkish red as well. |
YES!!! It's pinkish/red globs that are from building up. I usually wipe them down every day, but last night I forgot and I did it this morning. I think it is him tearing from whinning or whatnot. It just sticks to his hair underneath his eyes. So, majority says it's normal. Should I take him to the vet still? I have an appointment after work. Or, should I wait until I take him in for his next round of shots (which is next Friday). |
Honestly, I think it can wait. But just try to keep it clean b/c that pile up of wet hair can cause sores on their skin. Roxy is really bad right now, every 3-4 days I try a cut a little more hair off right there b/c it is always wet and I can see the skin underneath is pink and tender. |
So I should check his skin underneath the hair? And Howie has that as well. His hair on one side always seems to be moist. I couldn't figure out why. So it might mean he has a sore? I'll make sure to clean it every day. What do you use? I've been using a warm wash cloth to wipe it, but I've also been reading that it's good to get a thin brush (like a flea brush?) to brush it out. Which do you recommend? Also, I've gotten a lot of recommendations for the vet I go to, but do you feel like they will tell you to come in for anything? I'm sure it's to be on the safe side, but same with us humans, do you think they'll just have us come in just to come in, without even really knowing and considering giving us help before trying to get us in? |
Yes I use a wash soft face cloth or wet cotton ball. I will either use a toothbrush or flea comb as well, but I have found that by trimming the hair as well helps out with not having a pile of wet hair there constantly, because a pile of wetness can harbor bacteria and cause the skin to be tender and even cause sores. If the globs were green or yellow, then I would be concerned, but red eye boogers is kinda common. But, you have to do what makes you feel comfortable. :) |
Clear or pinkish???? My baby's tear seemed to be black?   |
Yeah the red can look almost dark maroon/black too! |
Thank you so much to everyone for all the replies. I am a lot less worried and just going to have the vet take a look at him when he gets his shots next week. |
Can anyone reccomend a tear stain remover that REALLY works? I've tried 3 so far and they don't seem to do anything. thanks, omega |
