PARVO risk We will not let our girl outside, on the floor, as she is only 9 weeks old. On Saturday she will get her second vacc. When is it relatively safe to let them run around outside? Does that risk differ from letting her go where other dogs often are? I hope I don't have to wait until her third vacc to let her run around outside. Any thoughts are appreciated. |
I think you should ask your vet because they all have their own recommendations on that. Ours said we could allow our pups out in our yard only after the second set of shots. We could take them anywhere after the 3rd set. I have a 12 week old pup and I have not let her out yet though. I decided to wait untill after the 3rd set. |
I would also ask the vet.. my baby has had all 3 dhlppc shots but has only had 1 bordetella and I was told it was fine to take him to the park etc... goodluck |
What I was told by my vet was they should not be on the ground outside where strange dogs have been and pooped. So from day one that I brought any of my dogs home I have let them in the backyard to potty. From what I understand parvo is in the soil. So you actually could get it on your shoes if you walked in a contaminated area and then bring it inside your home if you walked around your house with your shoes on. I think if you have a secure backyard where no strange dogs that could have parvo have pooped then she should be ok to let your puppy in the backyard. Although that is just my opinion and if you don't feel comfortable doing that, go with your gut. Parvo is scary and I wouldn't want to encourage you to do anything you are not comfortable doing. |
I would rather wait till she has all her shots. I had Missy for a few weeks and she only had 2 shots, I thought she would be OK as long as I watch her closely and dont let her eat or sniff anything wierd. So I took her out to my sons football game, I held her most of the day and she slept as little babies tend to do but I did take her on a few short walks so she can potty, a few days later she got sick i took her to the vet and they said she had coccidia. Not sure if it was from that one day at the football game or what but I didnt take any chances with Max. I kept him inside till he had all his shots, the wait didnt seem that long and it was well worth it.. Good luck! |
I would say to wait until the 3rd shots just to be sure- better safe than sorry! You never know what's been in your yard. During my last visit, my vet told me about a disease that animals can get from just smelling other infected animals' poo, and I believe pee. It's amazing the amount of diseases and risks our pets can be exposed to just in our own backyards! |
 I was told to wait until the 3rd set of shots. Pet stores are the worse to let your baby run around in until they're safe. Also I was told to watch out for mobile groomers. My vet told me to make sure you wipe your feet off well before coming in the house as we're likely to track it inside. Our Pit had parvo when he was a puppy and survived. Very very costly though. I don't know how a 2lb. puppy would do if they caught it. |
