Help with hair and skin problems! Urgent.... My Gus is almost 2 now and he has always had somewhat dry hair, the past 6months his hair is clumping (matting horribly) and his skin is so dry it peels some times. I have taken him to the vet, they gave him prednisone for itching, helped his itching some but his hair mats up almost quicker than we can brush it out. I have changed his food trying to come up with something that will work. He has had allergy shots but not helping at all. They have given us expensive shampoo's ..............nothing is working! Does anyone have any idea on how I can help gus before he is bald!!!! |
We keep chachis hair in a puppy cut because his hair matts too. Cowboy magic is good for getting the matts out |
First of all - welcome to Yorkie Talk!!! Try an oatmeal shampoo for the dry skin to see if that helps. I use a product called Buddy Wash which contains lavendar essential oil in it. For the matting, a spray-on leave-in conditioner might help. I've heard lots of people recommend Cowboy Magic or CC Ice on Ice for exactly this problem. Hope this helps and good luck to you. |
I have to say the cheap Johnson and Johnson detangler for babies works great for matts. I spray on after a bath and even if there is a knot on a dry coat - it works great and is cheap. As far as the dry skin I am sorry I do not know... maybe someone else can offer you some advice. Good luck and welcome to YT! |
There are soap free shampoos available at the Vet Clinic. Did they recommend one of them? He is quite young but does he tend to gain weight easily and is he pretty quiet, sleeping perhaps quite a bit for a two year old? |
His hair is along about 3" long. I had a Yorkie before (God rest his soul..........I loved him so much!) and this one is totally different. He seems a bit lazy to me and his skin is totally different. I have never seen a dog's skin peel like a human that has a sunburn. The vet doesn't seem to be wanting to do anything but medicate him. What do you guys feed your yorkies? |

I do not like prednisone as an answer especially so young a dog. I am leaning towards allergies or it could be a thyroid problem. He would have to off prednisone for a period of time to get a proper reading for a blood test - geriatric panel plus thyroid levels. I would think about talking to another Vet clinic maybe if possible locate a clinic in your area that breeders are going to. |
I tend to agree with the allergy thing particularly with a Yorkie. The only thing they suggest is taking him to an allergist at Texas A&M but there has got to be another answer. What kind of food do you feed your dogs? I have tried 6 different foods and he either hates them and won't eat for days or gets sick? |
Where do you get this stuff, I am in Texas and I have been two several different places and they offer..........zero. |
You can get the cowboy magic on ebay or google cowboy magic and places that sell it will come up |

Anything you can't find in PetsMart or PetCo you can find online. Amazon.com sells lots of stuff. That is where I got her Missing Link and Buddy Wash. |
sKIN PROBLEMS When my Westie had lots of skin problems the vet ran blood tests for thyroid problems and go her started on thyroid meds. He also ran tests for any food allergies. She was allergic to anything with wheat in it. I now have a Yorkie and her skin seemed to itch with nothing visibly to cause it. I now use Cowboy Magic shampoo, conditioner and detangler and keep her in a puppy cut.....she's a much more comfortable doll baby !!! |
You can also use Missink Link with his food. It really helps. |
cowboy Magic I just bought cowboy magic, what a great product. I am not using an oatmeal shampoo also. My vet said I need to put drops in her eyes with any shampoo. Her hair now feels wonderful and shines and the tangles come on much easier. Hope this helps also. Good luck |
