Oops! I found a flea! Rowdy is 11 weeks old and I found a flea this evening. I know he didn't pick them up from our yard - we use a natural flea control called beneficial nematodes - it's a microorganism that lives in the dirt and eats flea eggs (and fire ant eggs too, for those of you who live in the south) so it is really nice - it keeps the fleas and fire ants out of the yard. But of course, it doesn't keep the dogs from picking up an occasional flea from somewhere else. I think my little Rowdy may have picked up the flea(s) from my daughters dog over the weekend - so now the question is, what is safe to use to get rid of them? Thanks in advance for any information. |
My vet gave us frontline and it seems to be working. I think I've seen several other YTer say the same. |
I found a flea on Reagan a couple of weeks ago and rushed right to the vets to get frontline. We've used it on our big dogs for years and our cats as well(though not as much b/c our cats don't tend to get them much) but anyway it works great, or at least it always has on them. If they do get anything on them it kills them(fleas and ticks). I might have to look into that beneficial nematodes, we have ant galore and I hate ants... |
I just got a new puppy yesterday, 8 weeks old, 1.25 pounds. We went to the vet yesterday and I told the vet he was itching. Vet (not regular vet, she is out of town) just said if he had flees they would die soon (I live in Nevada). We had the puppy outside today and my son found several flees on him. I tried picking them out but they are fast. I have never even seen a flee before. I am afraid they will be all over my house and my other dog now. I will call the vet tomorrow, does anyone have suggestions for tonight and is it not really that big of a deal? or is it? :eek: |
I don't think its life and death for them to have a couple fleas. You don't want them infested with fleas or anything. I believe(could be worng correct me if I am) that the dog can get sick over a long period with lots of fleas and ticks. And I'm sure its not comfortable and very irritating to have fleas. I don't know if they will give your little pup anything yet or not, but the vet will let you know. You probably wouldn't want the fleas all over your house either. Just don't freak out though, if a dog goes outside chances are pretty good that it will get a flea or two in its lifetime. |
As far as the best working - Frontline Plus is very good - but check with your vet first...I think lots of us had experience with a flea or 2 - I spray my yard regular for bugs and also always check their faces and tummies cause that's where you see them first - GOOD LUCK ! |
fleas The problem with fleas is..they do not live on the dog. They jump on to feed and jump off into the carpets, furniture to lay eggs and make more fleas. They bring tapeworms with them and Yorkie are very prone to being allergic..so that means one flea bite can cause them to scratch themselves bald. |
