Ckc, Akc? Can someone tell the difference between CKC and AKC? |
They are simply different registries.:) AKC is the more established and respected of the two. If you are wanting to become involved w/ showing, etc, you'd be better off w/ an AKC dog. |
CKC can be Continential Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club, I believe. The Canadian Kennel Club is as respected as AKC. I believe AKC and CKC (Canadian) recognize each others dogs. AKC just means the dog is a purebred from two AKC registered purebred parents. It doesn't guarantee size, health or anything else, but it's better than nothing. And only AKC dogs can show in AKC events. Mixes and non-AKC dogs can still compete in some agility and obedience trials like APDT (Assoc. of Pet Dog Trainers). AKC has it's issues but it is still currently the standard. If you only want a pet though, it is probably more important to meet the parents and know the bloodline than rely only on AKC vs. CKC or no papers at all. CKC (Continential) is more.. shall we say.. flexible about the bloodline of a dog. (This is not to say AKC is out there inspecting all of their registered puppies either, because they are not.) Often puppy mill dogs or otherwise unregistered dogs can be registered with CKC. The problem is that some breeders/brokers will register their puppies CKC to say they have "papers" and unknowing people might assume they are AKC papers. Again, dogs can't compete in AKC events unless they are AKC registered, even rally, agility and obedience. AKC registered dogs can be ALTERED and participate in sports but not conformation (the show ring). Only unaltered AKC dogs can participate in AKC conformation. There is also APRI (American Pet Registry) - if you are just getting a pet there is not really a need to register so this just sounds like a way to take your money. I also think there is one out there that will register cross breeds if the parents were purebreds, which also sounds pointless to me. |
Ditto on Erin's post. |
Thanks for the info. I see all kinds of ads and just was not sure if it really meant anything more than just the registry. Since we are just owners I guess it does not really matter. We got to see parents for our babies and they were both adorable and healthy.:) |

And I can tell you from seeing it happen first hand (as in, being the one that turned someone in) CKC isn't shy in the least bit about showing up at your door and stripping your rights if they get wind of any shady business. |
mine are aca registered is that bad? |

When you register your dog with the ACA, you will receive a Certificate of Ownership, which proudly displays your dog’s information: such as name, color, parents name and registration number, etc. This certificate is as attractive as it is large. The 8 1/2” by 11” certificate is suitable for framing—certainly many happy dog owners do just that! You will also receive a handsome Lost and Found Tag for you dog that is ready to activate at your earliest convenience. The American Canine Association, Inc. includes this in your certificate packet so that we may begin protecting your dog right away! |

There are pros and cons to all registries. And unless the dog you get has had DNA work done and you've seen the results, you can never tell for sure if that puppy is actually from the dogs on the pedigree. There are a couple of people on YT going through this, where they went to register puppies and were told by AKC that the puppies couldn't be registered bc they weren't actually from the blood lines that were on the pedigrees. I say if you find a puppy you like and it's healthy go for it. |

And just because there is a standard doesn't mean that the dogs breed with in that registry will meet those standard. For example Yorkies are suppose to have erect ears and straight silky coats, and I've seen a ton of AKC Yorkies with floppy ears and wavy cottony coats. Sorry I need some sleep. We have new puppies and I haven't had much sleep. forgive me for getting grumpy. Like I mentioned before BAMBAM if you are just looking for a pet that you are going to have fixed and not breed or show, get some thing that you like and that is healthy and comes from healthy parents.:) Best of luck with your puppy search. |
Ckc CKC is becoming better known and is offering their own shows and such. You can get more information on them at their website, www.ckcusa.com. They are less expensive than AKC but I must agree with the others, AKC has the best reputation and prestige. Teri |
