would you let your yorkie play with unfamiliar big dogs? Hi, Just wanted to find out if you will let your baby play with unfamiliar big dogs? The reason I ask is because I will carry my baby away when I see an unfamiliar big dog because I am afraid they will hurt him even if they are only playing due to their size. The only ones I trust him with are the big breed puppies that he is playing with now and will grow up together. Am I doing the right thing or am I over worried? The other day, a woman with a very very big dog wanted to let her dog play with mine but I really didn't want to any chances of my baby being hurt so I politely declined. Also, there is this 5 months old boxer puppy living in our block that is huge compared to mine...I also politely declined because the boxer seems too rough..I wonder what do the owners think of me? I am afraid I will come by as being snobbish to them as I do see them often living in the same block. Besides that, I am uncomfortable with big black dogs that looks like a Rottie or a Dobby due to a childhood experience. I am not sure if this has influenced me in choosing who to let him play with. What does everyone else think? |
never ever do that, you never know if that dog will turn on your. no matter what!! dont trust any dog for that matter unless its your own, or a dog that knows yours verywell. |
I never let mine play with big dogs. If we are out on a walk I will let big dogs that are leashed sniff mine but otherwise I avoid them |
I do if they're on a leash and i'm holding Lilly in my hands. She loves playing with bigger dogs for some reason. |
Absolutely not! Toto has some big friends that she has been around and played with for a long time and they are the only big dogs I trust around her! If we are walking her and Patrick even sees a big dog in the distance, he scoops her up in the blink of an eye!! ;) |
Austin doesnt run around loose with them unless there old calm dogs but if were on a walk and i see the dog is calm we go say hello (if the owner says he/shes friendly ) i see nothing wrong with it i think when they have no contact with large dogs then all your doing is creating fears JMO |
I would never let mine play with a larger dog - you just never know what can happen, and why take that chance. That's why I have two puppies, so they always have a playmate. There are lots of nice big dogs, and something can happen even without there being vicious intent - big dogs play like big dogs and I think that's too rough for my little guys. I think you're absolutely right to decline play with unknown dogs - large or small. Don't worry about what other people think. Do what your gut tells you. You just never know. Actually, the other day I was out walking Oscar and Ruthie and a girl with a med-small size dog (3 times the size of Oscar) was coming towards us. SHE picked up HER dog - lol, I thought that was kindof funny... |
I don't let Coco play with any big dogs, familiar or not. I allow her to sniff, while I hold her, and the owner holds their big dog, but I don't let them play. She is too tiny and she gets really hyper and excited. I would be afraid that she would annoy the big dog or the big dog would think of her as a squeeky toy. I personally would never take the chance. That's why I take her to a dog park, only for small dogs under 15lbs. She's not a afraid of a thing, I'm afraid for her when it comes to big dogs. I don't trust big dogs at all. |
NO, Just my dogs around here that belong to My family, My daughter mix doesn't get to play with SunShine B/C her little dog is wild. When she goes outside with her harness on she smells of our fox terrier but I don't let play together because she is a inside dog and Gracie is a outside dog Plus my hubby would die. |
i agree with everyone else - I wouldnt even let my girls play at the dog park even if they did get off my lap unless I was RIGHT there and could snatch them up. Why take a chance ? it only takes a split second to rock our worlds....and the risk is too high no matter how friendly the big dog Potter - you're just being SMART - if you think of all the things that can hurt them -(not including illness) I think dog attacks on small breeds & cars would be the top 2 biggest threats |
The only big dog that mine plays with is our lab. I just don't trust anyone else's because you just never know. |

Never Ever! But then I don't really have to worry, my Yorkie is NOT friendly with other dogs. He was so scared when he first came here and met the maltese (the sweetest, calmest, lovingest dog) but now she is his best buddy. But the neighbors have a "puppy" yorkie and he snarls and growls and even goes after him when he is too "forward." So He sort of set the stage for no playing with "big" dogs. It's just not worth the risk, it only takes a second for things to go very badly and it is always the little guy that gets the worse of it. So no no no!!!!:thumbdown |
I do the same as you, if walking around and a big dog comes up, we'll go to the other side or I'll snatch him up completely. All it takes is a second, then it's too late. |
Once I get a feel of how the big dog is, then I make my decision. Rocky LOVES big dogs, so if the dog is gentle, then I don't see the problem with it. I do keep him closely supervised though, except with Gizmo. When he's with Gizmo I can step away for a minute. Yesterday he met my friends 2 labs and Rocky had the time of his life! THey were all playing fetch, and Rocky was the slowest runner so the younger lab would stop and wait for him to catch up! It was the cutest thing. And a couple days ago he met a dobermain, this doberman was really gentle too. It all depends on whose dog it is also. If I know and trust the owner, and he/she says the dog is gentle, then definitly. If I don't know the owner, but get vibes that the dog and owner are good, I'll hold Rocky for the bigger dog and let them sniff eachother. I've been around bigger dogs my whole life, and Rocky is my first small dog. I honestly have no fear of bigger dogs (unless they give me a reason) |
