anal glands We got Chloe's anal glands suppressed a month ago, and today I noticed her scooting her rump on the floor again. How often does this need to be done? |
Im not sure, i'd like to know as well, because it's been 2 months since i last got Oreo's Expressed and he's starting to rub his toosh.. and Ginger hasn't yet and she's 6 months old now. |
Sorry, I can't help, but will be watching answers to this post. I'd never even heard the term anal glands until I came to YT. Kim |
It's not something I would have done again. Angel and Prince went to the vet a week ago and I didn't know at the time but they ended up squeezing those glands. Angel came home with her insides almost on the outside. SHe kept biting at it like it was itching so badly. Now its healed some but it doesnt look the same anymore. She was fine without it. |
If the gland is not expressed, fecal matter will start collecting again. This is why the dog scoots it's butt on the ground. IT ITCHES!!! What we've done in the past is everytime they go to the groomers, they get their gland expressed. With Angel, maybe they squeezed her too hard. Our groomer does it while she's showering them. Because it is fecal matter, it stinks. It's like goop coming out of their butts. Pretty gross! |

Biddy gets hers done whenever she goes to the groomer too. Tucker has never has his done - I think he might be too little?? He's 4 1/2 months and 2 1/2 pounds... |
My boy is 7 months old now, and he has never had it done. But, then again i never see him scoot his butt across the floor. Are there any other people in here with dogs this age that never had this done to them yet???? It concerns me a little bit, but i don't want to worry myself to death...LOL!!!! :) |
I had my 2 yr old yorkie since he was 8 mnths and he never did it.. its just my 4 wk old yorkie |

Oscar is almost six months old and has never had his expressed. I also have a nine year old Elkhound mix, and he has had no problems either. From what I understand, not all dogs need their glands relieved. The purpose of the glands is to scent the feces as it comes out. Sometimes the glands don't do this function properly and then a build up occurs, and this is when the dog will start scooting. My cats are the same way. Hope this helps ! :) |
I think it is one of those things that is different with every dog. Some dogs need them to be expressed more often than others. If your dog scoots his/her bottom, then it needs to be expressed again. If you don't see the scooting, then don't worry! |
What happens if we don't get it done? I didn't have time to get her to the vet today as we only have one vehicle and my husband had to take it to work. We are going out of town tonight so I wont be able to get her to the vet to have it expressed atleast till Monday. So.. what happens if we don't do it? Will she be okay? Will it fix itself on its own? My cat has never scooted, but sometimes he has clear liquid stuff on his anus that smells pretty bad and I think it expressed itself. Hes never had his done by a vet. Will my dogs do the same? |
anal glands It is something I rarely do. For some reason, the more you do it, the more it needs doing. A diet with good fiber content seems to take care of my dogs..unless tehre is a problem with them impacting Iwould would not expressed them...same as with pulling hair from the ears..I rarely do that also..but I have if the dog is prone to ear infections..hair does keep moisture in the ear. |
