Borax?? My dogs have a few fleas...I treated them with advantage and most seem to be gone although I did have one in the carpet. I have heard that Borax is just awesome for carpets...but how long do I leave it on for before vaccuming? Has anyone used Borax for fleas before and if so can you give me some clues on how I should use it properly..is it safe for the dogs to be on the carpet? Dawn |
i sprinkled borax on my carpet. and left it on for about 1/2 hr then vaccumed it up. I called the company asking if it was safe to use around pets and the lady kept insisting that since 20 mule team borax has not been tested for that purpose , she would not reccomend it. I also sprayed vinegar all over the place to get rid of fleas. I vacuumed everything over and over again. about 2 X's a day. cracks and crevices of sofa and chairs. I washed bedding every day. I finally got rid of them. this was the only time I have ever had to deal with fleas. good luck these darn things are no fun to deal with. |
Ok..sounds good!! I live in an area that was built on sand...so lots of sand fleas!! I have dealt with fleas for years but usually Advantage takes care of them..all summer we had NO fleas and now they are starting to rear their evil heads lol..thanks!! Dawn |
I've used it, and it works GREAT! Haven't used it since I've had the yorkies, but our cat(s) used to bring fleas in, and with toddlers in the house (at the time) I didn't want to use chemicals. I would actually sprinkle it on the carpet, use a broom to rub it down into the fibers, and then leave it on there at LEAST a day. It works by drying them out (basically!) The only problem I ever had was sometimes it would dry our feet out if we walked around barefoot. IMO it's fine to use around the animals! Esp. if you rub it in so that they aren't kicking up a cloud and inhaling it. |
Thanks for posting this!!! Wow, thanks guys for this thread!!! I happen to have some borax by the dryer. I found a flea that jumped on me and I am kinda flipping out. I have not had to deal with fleas for years!!! All of my animals get flea medicine regularly, it costs me alot but it has always worked and fleas are not too bad here. I just now checked them over and didn't find a single flea on them. But it bothers me that one jumped on me, I just hate those things!! So I will be cleaning, sweeping, washing and using some borax on the carpet. A little overboard for one flea but I don't want any chance of having it invite its friends over!! I have had a flea free home for many years and I want to keep it that way!!! |

May I suggest that you put some moth balls in your vacuum cleaner bag also, or change it every time you vacuum. They can also live in there and you kick them back out again when you vacuum. If the Borax doesn't work, try straight Boric Acid (which, I believe, is the main ingredient in Borax). You can buy it at the hardware store. I would definitely try to keep the babies in another part of the house while it's down, either product. If it dries human feet, imagine what it will do to their little paws. Good luck! |

My vet told me that they have gotten a lot of complaints about Advantage not doing the job. He reccommended Frontline. As for the Borax, I have no idea. |
My vet recomensed Revolution. |
I used to pay for a company to come in and treat my carpets it was safe to have birds and other animals on the floor immediatly afterwards. The guy told me it was just borax. I have used it a few times since then with no probs. i do try to keep the animals out of the treated room before I vacuum but sometimes it is just impossible. Jiggety Jig was correct, you leave it for 24 hrs and then vacuum. And you do need to sweep it into the fibers. |
Here is another thread discussing using Earth, as it is chemical free. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...+swimming+pool |
