For those of you who will have a very cold winter I have a question I live in Montreal and on some days it gets extremely cold I'm wondering what should I buy Royce to keep him really warm . Even if he is pee pad trained he still needs to go outside for some fresh air . Today the temperature is 0 degrees,is it save to take him out with only a light fleece jacket ? |
Good question. I have a toy poodle and has a lovely warm coat in the winter. I recently acquired my yorkie baby and want to know what others do as well. I was contemplating not taking him out in the snow even with a sweater and cold. (I'm afraid he will freeze....lol) I too would love to read what others in colder areas do during the winter with their babies. :thumbup: |
IF I lived where you live - I'd invest in a good warm coat - maybe boots if your yorkie will wear them - (mine don't but some do) I can still remember my grandma with her toy poodle 'Powder Puff' (lol - yes that was her name) and she always dressed her in a coat during the New England Winters - - I USED to think it was silly as a teen - but now I know why she did that - She was a really good mom to her baby...I sure miss her. |
I make the girls fleece coats...It gets pretty cold here in Mass too...and lucky me!! we just happen to live in the snow belt! YUCK! I double the fabric and make them fleece hats. |

Definitely get him a good, warm coat. There are lots of places that make them. You can always check out Mike's photos (Alaskayorkie) of Eddie and Jack. They have cute coats and boots on all the time for the Alaska snow and love being outside. I have a few different coats for Sissy, some lighter, some heavier. She wouldn't wear boots last year but she was still a young pup, so I might try them again. I don't like winter myself, so I didn't try walking her last year. She only went outside to potty and came right back in. I can also tell you that when we had snow on the ground (which was much of the winter), I kept a portion of the grass shoveled for her to go on, cause she didin't like the snow. |
I live in GTA and this is Piccolo's first winter. I bought him 3 warm coats and boots. He's fine wearing coats but gets crazy when I put on the boots. He either shakes them off or just lies on the floor and refuses to move. Is there any trick to make him wear them ? |

I would definitely get a coat to keep your baby warm. There are lots available - check eBay. Also many YT members make great warm clothing. Check out www.gofetch.com - great fleece hoodie. |
Abbie seems to enjoy the cold much better than Max. She will stay outside playing in the snow all day if she could but Max HATES cold weather--even when it's just starting to get a little cooler. When it's extremely cold--forget it--it's impossible to get him to go outside. I have really warm coats for them for the winter. Max's is wool and lined and Abbie's has fur inside. I tried the boots for Max since he hates the cold so much but he would not wear them. It's worth a try, though |
Simon and Hallie love the snow and here in NY it gets pretty cold so I usually bundle them up in a tshirt and a winter coat. They have some fleece ones and some parka style coats they wear. I keep a towel in my entry way to wipe them off after playing in the snow and sometimes before we go out I will put one in the dryer so it's nice and warm when we come inside. |
Well, I am here in North Dakota and my dogs go outside. Sometimes , I have to coax them but they do. My yorkie wears a little coat when it gets down there below 0* but usually a little sweater will do. In fact it is only goint go have a high of around 32* today. She was a little shivery this morning when I was holding her so she had a little sweater on today. She is the cool one. She is the 4# one but the little under 2# is a little warm thing and is plenty warm most of the time so I am not concerned with her today.:thumbup: |
It's all about the layers.... Put a coat over a shirt over a shirt... That's how we got through last winter in Wisconsin. And Trixie is trained to go potty outside. If it's really cold, just make the walks really short. And keep moving! |
The best person to tell you is your Yorkie. As said before, a good coat or a couple of layers is excellent, and a set of boots / shoes if your dog will wear them. But the main thing to keep in mind is the time spent outside, and how your dog reacts to it. When it gets below freezing, I would start only going out for a few mins at a time, build up tolerance and keep your trips outside to 10 - 15 mins max when it starts to get bitterly cold. I don't bother with a coat for my boy (5 lbs) unless its an icey wind or below freezing, mainly because he tells me he doesn't want it. (I still keep a little tee-shirt or something in my pocket, and figure I can always scoop him up and insert him into my jacket if it gets bad). I hope you enjoy making snowmen, snow angels and have loads of snowball fights with your little one. :) |
