Nails Does anybody clip their dogs' nails themselves? I bought a clipper this weekend, but I'm afraid to use it! Any tips on clipping nails?? THANKS! |
i clip Oreo and Ginger's nails.. It's harder though because their nails are black, not like my cat's nails they are like ours (clear) and you can see the vein so you won't accidentally cut it. I'm scared when i cut their nails, but i make sure to cut a little bit and then i'll file it the way the nails would touch the floor. |
I trim Baileys sometimes between groomings, but I dont take off very much, cause Im afraid of taking too much,, So I just do a little at a time, You have to be very careful, especially if they are figgitiy! |
I clip my babies' nails. I asked around before I started doing it myself. It's easier to cut them after they've had a bath - they're much softer. Usually I cut just up to where the nail starts to curve - I'm afraid to go any further than that. So far, that's been working out very well for me. Hope this helps. Kim |

I just cut off the sharp ends. Anything beyond that I leave for the groomer. |
Now I'm REALLY scared lol :) Actually, my cousin is a dog groomer, but I just wanted to clip their nails between grooming. I think I'll have her show me. Thanks!! |
If you get any good tips from her please be sure to let us know! Good luck, Kim |

Maggie's Nails I too was worried about cutting the nails, because she is so squirrmy. We are lucky though. Our driveway is concrete and 350' long. I take her out and exercise up and down the driveway. Figured that the concrete would give her a great nail filing and also smooth away dead skin on her toes. |
I use the human large toenail clippers...and I also use a ROUGH Emery board to keep them smooth and it also files down the nail at the same time - sometimes I don't even need the clippers !! To get mine used to an Emery Board - I file my own nails first -then tell them it's THEIR Turn and it seems to help - they both sit and let me file and my girls DO NOT like their nails done ! Good luck.... |
Nails I 'am afraid I will cut to far down , so we get ours done at the groomers every 4 weeks $5.00 not a bad price... so I don't have time to fight with her over getting them clipped I just take her , but she is very good for my groming lady really listens to her! :p |
I cut Stewie's nails. The first time I did it, he was nervous and jerked his paw. I cut too far down. I just dipped his bleeding nail into some flour and it stopped the bleeding. He didn't yelp or freak out, so I don't think it hurt him. |
If you look on the underside of the nail, you will see a groove, cut just above that! Mine hates cuts, my husband has to hold her in his arms and hold her foot out, and then I do the dastardly deed! Ha! Pat |
