Biting wood? A question... My boy's teething. He's trying to bite everything that's wooden and I walk behind him with a clear deodorant and try to make him not to. Fun, have to say :rolleyes: . On the last trip to Target I spotted some real wood unstained and untreated little bowls in 1 $ bins. I got one (for the keys) but ended up giving it to the dog, hoping to distract him from biting doors and furniture. Is it ok to chew on it? As I said it has nothing on it just plain wood. They don't swallow splinters do they... Maybe I'm overreacting as usally. |
I wouldn't give him anything wood. They will bite through it and break off little pieces at a time. Mine got into my wooden basket and went in my sons room and found pencils...they had pieces of wood in their poop:eek: Also Timmy got sick on me and had to get some x-rays of his belly...when the vet showed me the pics he had something in his stomach and we couldn't tell what it was.....2 days later he pooped out pieces from my wooden basket. That is not good for them...it can actually do some damage. Mine used to chew on my walls and furniture..I bought bitter apple which worked great for us. Try to buy him belly sticks or even a Kong....mine love them and they go at it for hours. |
My little guy has a basket bed and I found he too love s to bite it. I covered it with a long fleece blanket..............I too wouldn't let him have wood to bite. |
Puppies chew EVERYTHING!! I wouldnt' let him chew on anything wooden either.. |
Feminvstr (Kimberly) suggested getting cow hooves for them to chew on. I'd seen them in petsmart, but they seemed so disgusting.... well, I finally got some and my kids love them. They never get tired of chewing on them. You might want to give it a try. :) |

My teething puppy loves to chew on wood, too! But I do not let her. I give her flossies and bully sticks to chew on. I would not let your little guy chew on wood. It could splinter and he could choke or something. I would get him a hoof or bully stick or something...anything besides wood. |
The wood might break and he can get splinters. Maybe an actual stick, like a branch from a tree would be safer, but I guess they can still break. My parents have a bonfire pit at there house and theres a big pot w/ sticks and wood in it. Gizmo loves chewing them! But these really haven' broken off or anything |
Bud just started to do that too. I hve kids and just yesterday found him chewing a wooden Thomas train!! :eek: So I got chewies for him but he still prefers the wooden trains. LOL Im going today to see what else I can find for him. He HATED the flavord bones that are plastic type stuff. What about a real bone?? I know not to give pork or chicken bones but how about a large size beef bone??? Anyone? |
My Chewy got her name because she loved to chew on everything when she was little. She's seven years old now, and when we go to the beach, she loves to chew on driftwood, probably because of the salt...but I don't let her have it because it will splinter in her mouth or stomach or intestines......it would cause damage in any event. I give her other things....bully sticks are her fave....pig's ears and all those disgusting things of the like. :p |
My Petsmart trainer suggested "N bones" for the small dog breeds. Petsmart had them and mine loved them. They were a little pricey but lasted for several days. They are digestable and will not cause stomach upset. One of my yorkies loved to chew on my wicker baskets so I tried the bitter apple spray and he hasn't touched any of them since. It worked great for us. Good luck!! |
