I think I made Lillie sick Lillie is only 17 weeks old...last night I gave her a denta delicious bone to chew on....it is digestible (so it says) and very very hard....Her teeth haven't started falling out yet so I figured this would help as she chews EVERYTHING! she ate about a quarter of it and seemed to me fine...it must make them thirsty because she drank tons of water...then she walked around the corner and threw up the water....I just thought..she drank to much to fast....about 45 minutes later, she threw up again! this time you could see some the the bone in it..well she must have aspirated alittle bit and started to do the chocking thing...you know kinda sounds like a reverse sneeze....I could tell by her little face she was scared to death! and Sadie was just sitting there looking at her...I finally got her calmed down and she went to sleep on me....Well, needless to say that is the LAST time I give her one of those! Both my girls eat kibbles...do you really think they need chewies? I was thinking about getting a marrow bone for them...this way they can chew....good for their teeth and they can't break off pieces... |
I am sorry this happened. I dont know about the bone marrow. I am always worried about them splintering. Maybe someone else will know |

1 Attachment(s) At that youg age I wounldn't give them anything to rich,Little tummy's just are not ready ,better a nylabone or a baby size kong with a bit of peanut butter on it to entice them to chew....for just a general treat we like the Iams puppy bones....even better than milkbone products. |
I only give Piccolo ropes to chew on. |
Why not Flossies or Bully Sticks? |
The trainer at Petsmart recommended a new product for little dogs to chew on called the "N bone". All 4 of mine loved them and they lasted for several days. I'm pretty sure she said it was okay for puppies too. Mine also like bully sticks and flossies but the N bones were nice because they didn't stink. Petsmart had them for $3.99 each and they are kind of small. I'll have to check ebay to see if I can find them cheaper. |
Do you think that just by eating their kibbles this will keep their teeth in good shape? The girls like to chew on things,,,,,especially Lillie where she is just a puppy...her teeth haven't started falling out yet and I thought a very hard bone would help them along. I get really nervous giving them things to chew on that they can break apart..Sadie chocked on me once too!! Scared the life out of me! |
This website has free shipping on all orders and carries the N bone. Cheaper then Petsmart. http://www.doggy-gifts.com/N-Bone I think that it is really good for them to have something to chew on so they don't get into a bad habit of chewing on things they shouldn't. They do need the extra chewing when teething and it will encourage their baby teeth to fall out. |
thank you everyone for your advise! |
My Joey loves raw hides. |
I gave one these to Gizmo once but it did not agree with his tummy.... at all... |
I really think that the only safe treat are the Bully sticks and the flossies. I have seen negative press on almost anything edible EXCEPT those. |
I give Teddy little bones from Petco (I threw away the package and put them in a zip lock so now I'm not possitive of the name but I think...) They are called Denti-bones. They look very similar to a little rawhide bone but there is a red strip entwined in them. I hope I explained that right! LOL He really loves them and chews on one for ages without anything coming off of it. Sometimes it unravels but I have yet to see him get any chunks off of them and he sure sure gives them a work over! We go through them quickly because if Teddy leaves one laying around my Golden get to them and they dissapear! LOL :animal36 Kim |
I think I might pick up a kong for her...well, I 'll have to get 2..Sadie steals all of Lillies chew toys! That little theft! I don't give raw hide chews...they are full of fat...My Mom and Dad gave one of their dogs a raw hide chew (this was several years ago) and it got lodged in her throat..my Dad had to literally go down the dogs throat to get it out...her tongue was turning blue!! So...I don't think I will be getting those..I have read here that alot of people use the bully sticks...can you get them at petco? I am just so afraid of them chocking..Lillie needs something to help with her teething. |
