I was shocked! Imagine my embarrassment when I invited a friend of ours to stop by with her 2 Yorkies for a playdate and my boyz acted like total idiots! They were fine with Tater last week...well, except for Riley. He started off good but then Tater (who weighs 8 pounds) knocked him over and rolled him across the floor, he was playing and Riley is such a lightweight at only 4.2 pounds, so he stayed on a lap for the rest of the day. Jo and Tater played so hard they both slept the rest of the day. Anyway...when my other friend brought her pair over it was a different story. My loving boyz, Jo & Riley, turned into Snarly and Growly. I couldn't believe it...they love everyone! The only thing I could justify their behavior with is the fact that their female is still nursing a litter and the male is not neutered...Tater is neutered. Could this have been the difference...too many hormones floating around?? Please tell me it was...I would be heartbroken to know my boyz could be so rude for no reason  I wanted to have a playdate before winter but now I don't know. Any ideas?? |
Wow! I don't know what could have caused their behavior. But I hope you find an answer so they can have some more play dates :( |
I don't have an answer to your question however, I do have a similar problem. Sadie has ALWAYS been around other dogs (we also have a very large cat) She has never really cared for other dogs...she will tolerate them for a while but, then she lets them know she isn't happy that they are here..I recently got another furbaby, Lillie is 17 wks old...Sadie has become very dominant over her...but, only if I am at my parents and there are other dogs around...I mean she will ATTACK Lillie! Even though Sadie is only 5.5 lbs she has a much larger attitude (I'm sure you know what I am talking about) I spoke with a trainer this morning...she told me to get the book "The Leader of the Pack" said it is a very good book...we spoke for 45 mins..I told her how I was handling this...she told me some things that I shouldn't be doing...1 was letting her sleep with us...she told me that I have to let Sadie know that "I" am the leader of the pack....not her...to let her know (if I can) before she is going to do something bad to stop her...and if i can't get to her in time to make sure I get to her immediately and tell her BAD! She has to know I AM THE ALPHA!! Have your furbabies always been aggressive towards other dogs? Sorry this was so long but, maybe something I said can help you out. I hope so. |
Believe it or not we really don't have any dominance issues at our house. Both of our boyz are very loving and accepting of other animals (except squirrels and birds!) and I've never seen them act like this. They even get along with the Mastiff across the street and the ducks in the park. I hope it was just all the hormones in their territory that made them crazy. |

I'm no expert but this comment makes me think it has something to do with it - Quote:
I think Aliens took over their bodies. They'll be back to normal in no time :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p I bet you'll have a GREAT time at the play date - remember - they were in their own home ...it's different out in public or someone elses home |
HAHAHAHAHAHA His name is Tater? How adorable :) You know sometimes Simon acts weird like that too and he loves everyone. Maybe it was the female or they could just sense something was "off" I'm sure your little "aliens" will be back to normal in no time! |
It may have to do with "territory". Where did they meet originally? At the other house? at the park? neutral territory? If this was the Yorkies first time coming to your house - then they invaded your boyz' territory and that may be a different story - protecting my territory - whereas on "the Yorkies" territory or in neutral territory, it wasn't an issue. Just a thought......... |
That's what I thought...I can't think of any other reason they would be so wierd. Hmmm...aliens snatched my babies?? Well, if that's what happened it was a quick invasion because they're back to normal now! I am hoping to have a playdate at some point but we have some work to finish first...I need to install an alien repellant permiter fence! LOL! Quote:

Yep, his name is Tater...AKA Tater Tot or Tater Bug. He's a Yorkie Shi-tzu mix that my friend just adopted from their shelter...he's 8 months old and 8 pounds, he's a sweetie! Quote:

They've never appeared to be territorial but this was their first meeting...they didn't feel threatened by Tater though and he came to our house for their first meeting too. I really think it was the whole nursing female/intact male thing that threw them off. Quote:

I would say it's probably a territorial thing. I've never been through anything like this so, I'm not sure. |
Maybe they just didn't like the dogs. Polly loves everyone except my neighbor, when she comes over Polly wants me to hold her and if she talks to her, Polly will turn her head away from her. First time it happen I blew it off now, if she comes over I go to the door and tell her that my floor is wet and I will talk to her later. I think dogs are good judges of character. |
They were fine with our friends but they sure had their little butts in the air about their Yorkies. They didn't get mean or fight or anything like that...don't get me wrong...they just growled and snarled a lot along with some fancy footwork a couple times, ears totally erect and tails straight up in the air. We kept an eye on them but after a few minutes I picked my boyz up and put them back inside...it was a short playdate since she had to get back home to feed the puppies. |
Hello and welcome aboard! :) As for your question.... Personally, I would not subject my beloved pet to the hormone treatment for the mere reason of me wanting offspring. I certaintly would not want to run the risk of it or other problems showing up later. Secondly, did you purchase him as pet quality or for breeding? This is my humble opinion as well. If you want, I could give you the name and address of an excellent vet in Arecibo, Puerto Rico...........(what town are you in). I am sure he will explain to you better than me or anyone else as to why it is NOT a good idea to subject him to the hormonal treatment. ;) Good luck, Jess |
