please help if you can! Hi all, I have written about this somewhat before but I need help! My boyfriend wants to get a kitten. Cole, my male yorkie, is 3 lbs and 1 1/2 years old. I went to the vet the other day to get some shots for Cole and I asked his opinin about the cat and he said to get a male cat as he things he will get along with Cole better. Does anyone have experience with this? Would a male dog get along with a male cat better? Does it matter?? Please help if you can! Thanks! |
i don't think it would matter but does your dog like cats been around them before? mine like cats and if you got a kitten the cat would get use to the dog but you should make sure the dog likes cats 1st some dogs just don't like cats at all and can get hurt the cat may clwa them or so on be careful but they should be fine. |
My personal opinion is that male cats are more laid back, or maybe just lazy. But they seem to tolerate kids and puppies better. |
I have had cats my entire life..I have had both male and female...I find the males to be very grumpy..My females were more laid back..I have a 22 lb Maine Coon Cat (12 yrs old) he has never been what I would call laid back...he tolerates the girls but he can get very nasty... |
I have had a lot of cats in my long life - and I do believe without a doubt the best natured are the neutered males. My last neutered male would be a little fearful and somewhat aggressive toward a new little pet when I first got it - but I'd sit on the sofa beside my cat with the new pet in my lap and totally not allow him to be mean. And, within days and a little time together - he would become a totally inseparable friend to every new pet I brought home. I have also read (and I totally believe it) that a neutered male cat often makes the best surrogate mother to any young animal (kitten or puppy). THIS IS IMPORTANT -- it certainly helps that any new pet brought into your house is very young - just a baby - if you want your cat to take a real liking to it. So - I suppose having a Yorkie and wanting it to get along with a cat - would mean that your chances of success are much more - if he meets a little kitten...and not an older cat. Good luck! I have both and I would get a male, Lexie & Bear are the cat chasers and play with the cats all the time...My boys get along better with them then my girl cat, she has always been very to say the least the B word to everyone but me, but she does have her moments with me...I would have him neutered if you get a male very young, no marking.....good luck....:) |

I don't know, I can't see why it would make a difference?? But anyway, I have both a male Yorkie, and a male cat and they get along GREAT together. They are always playing and horsing around :p They love each other! |
I've had male and female cats around my Yorkies and nothing has ever happened that was bad. Only thing is my male yorkie tries to hump the cats male or female. I don't know what to think, maybe he's just asserting his manhood. Just watch that the cat doesn't scratch your puppy's eyes. Adult cats who aren't used to being around dogs just try to defend themselves. They don't know that your yorkie means no harm. Course it might be different with a baby cat? |
Thank you so much everyone for all your help! :D |
You have to be very careful getting a cat. Some cats just dont get along with dogs and Yorkies are a small dog. There was just someone on here that had to get rid of her yorkie because the cat was attacking it. My cat does not get along with my yorkies but she is declawed and cant hurt them. I personally think another yorkie would be a better playmate |
I have BOTH male and female cats with my Yorkies and other dogs. It REALLY makes no diference at all. the important thing is to get a young kitten and be in charge at first. You will notice your dog will chase and go nuts but you need to tell it NO right from the beginning ... usually it doesn't take long at all to get them comfortable with eachother if you have a good tempered yorkie and a young kitten. |
I wanted to get another yorkie but my bf is dead set on having a cat. He grew up with them and loves them. We at least agreed that we would get it as a kitten. I have no doubt that Cole will LOVE having the kitten around. He is so good natured and well behaved. I just worry about the cat not being fond of him. :( |
