Am I being paranoid, or over protective? Gracie is now 4 1/2 months old. She has been sleeping on my bed in a laundry basket until a couple of nights ago when she figured out how to climb out of it. For the last couple of nights I have turned the basket over, creating a sort of crate for her. She has been sleeping through the night for a good week or so now. Is it safe to let her sleep on my bed without being confined? My bed is fairly high off the ground and I have feared she would fall off. Second, though she has been sleeping through the night, might she be inclined to pee on the bed if she is not confined to a crate. I really want to have her sleep with me the normal way, but am not sure when the right time would be. |
I'll be glad myself to read some of the replies. My baby is only 2 months old, and my bed, too, is high off the ground. I plan to build a ramp for her and Chloe, but I don't know at what age she'll be able to figure it out. I sure don't want her falling out of bed. Best of luck to you! |
Lexie & Bear both have slept with me since they came home...Lexie was 4 months and Bear was 3 months, my bed is really high and I have to put both on it, but they don't try to get down during the night and Bear pee only once...Good Luck....:) |
Bruce has always slept with me. I could not bear trying the crate thing (my mistake I know), but he came from such a wretched place (in Bellevue, WA actually) where he had been all penned up...So I have always let him in bed with me...He sleeps up by my head so it wakes me if he trys to get up, and I have a very high bed and he has jumped it with no problem... Here is what I know with the really tiny ones be safe rather than sorry...A laundry basket will not keep a pup from going over the edge it will move with them when they walk...I may try pet steps or a ramp. |
My yorkie sleeps with me on my bed since she was 3 months old. My trick is since my bed is against a wall I put her against the wall so she has to climb over me to fall over;) I never had a problem with her falling cause she doesn't get up at night and walk around on the bed. If you decide to let her out of the crate just be sure that when you turn around she doesn't fall off :aimeeyork |

Grayson has been in a crate since he came home, he will someday sleep with us but for now he is in our bedroom in his crate. He has slept through the night since his second night with us. He has been home for 2 weeks now, and is 3 1/2 months old. |
When I first got Tila, I slept on the couch ha ha! but then I realize, how ridiculous! I was not in the mood to spend 30 bucks on pet stairs so I made my own with the extra stiff pillow from my couch (which we don't use, we got others). it's a sort of ramp She pee-ed on the bed once, I just got mad ha ha ha, they say taht's bad, but she never did it again! (except for once, but she was sick and just a got a shot and was exhausted so I wasn't upset.) I'm ALWAYS flipping out that Tila will jump and get hurt, she does jump sometimes, but she's big enough now that she doesn't get hurt, but I never LET her do it. |
My pup has slept with me since he was 8 weeks old when I got him. From the start - he could climb on anything - all my furniture. And when he jumped off he scared me todeath..... because he didn't carefully get down. He'd jump out and up and awaaaaaaaay --- making about a 6-foot jump for himself. But he always made it. He has a step and easily get on and off my bed. When he was a pup he always slept well through the night and never fell off the bed. We've just never had any problems. You might try it for a night or two and see how it's going to work. I'll bet he'd rather snuggle up with you than be in a basket -- Carol Jean |
I tried letting Gracie sleep with me the normal way last night, no basket, no crate. She did not try to get off the bed, but she did pee on the bed at 0330! I caught her just as she had finished. I took her downstairs to her ex-pen and crate where she spent the remainder of the night. I guess it is back to a basket or crate for awhile. |
How big is Gracie? The thing that bothers me is jumping off the bed. I don't like Susan jumping off the bed but I can't stop her because she's up and down all day and sometimes during the night. She's fairly big though -- 8 1/2 lbs. Still, I worry about the hip thing. |
Gracie is just over 4 lbs. now. She will jump off the sofa even though I have doggie steps there for her. The steps are too low for the bed. |
I don't know. I'd be worried about one that tiny jumping off a high bed. I think you're right to be concerned, not paranoid or over protective at all. I think your concern is right on target. |
GiGi has jumped off the couch since she was 10 weeks old. I'm not so worried about that. My bed is high, and she has been sleeping with us for the last month. She sleeps all night, but she jumps on and off the bed..... and I worry about that. |
for now, you can put a box by the bed so she can jump off and go potty, and maybe put a towel or two on top of the box. i use a crate and a towel on top of it,, it works |
