Natural Flea Remedies
 
Anyone use natural flea remedies? If so, what do you use??

I'm just SO frustrated with the ridiculously expensive products like Frontline, Advantix, etc. that I get from my vet. Not only do they not work, but they cost a fortune, AND I am really not liking the idea of putting all these pesticides on my babies. I think this stuff is a major contributor to Hobbs' dandruff. So, I want to try using a natural remedy. I read another post on here that suggested using 1 drop of Citronella oil, 1 drop of Lemongrass oil, 1 drop of Tea Tree oil, and 1 ounce of water mixed and you spritz it on your furbaby before they go outside. I just ordered some samples of all these oils online and I can't wait to try it out and see if it works and see if it help Hobbs' dandruff.

So, does anyone else use natural flea remedies?:confused:

Ive heard you can use brewers yeast but I have never tried it. I am amazed when i hear that people still have fleas after using the flea preventative. Mine use advantage and I have never had a flea problem. Maybe some dogs are more suceptable to fleas:confused:

I'm hoping this gets more replies too. I have the same problem. I have two who are constantly itching right now, and I found a flea on one of the babies. I agree - I've used Frontline and it didn't work. Just costs alot!

I think it is where we live. We are in an apt. complex next to woods and the apt. people will not treat the yard for fleas, no matter how many times I've asked. And I'm not about to treat it bc it is a HUGE yard and EVERYONE and their mother takes their dogs out in that yard and reinfests the yard. I just can't spend that kind of money on a lost cause such as treating our yard. AND, it is SOOO hot here. Even during the winter, it doesn't get cold enough to kill the fleas, so they never die off. It is a year-round stuggle. We've never had a problem with fleas until we moved here in May next to these woods and in an apt. with all these other dogs. It really sux. I can't wait to leave. :(

Oh I see. That would be awful. Here in Indiana we have cold winters so it kills them off. I just hate fleas. Chachi is allergic to them if he even has one on him his allergies act up so I use the preventative regularly

i use k-9 advantage and still have horrible fleas. Every time mine come in from outside, i flea comb them and they still dig. NONE of the flea medicine works on mine. Right now I have a pregnant bitch and a nursing mom so I can't use anything on them but bath them every three or four days with Dawn and flea comb what seems like a hundred times a day. I have sprayed all my furniture. i don't have carpet in the dog room. The only thing I haven't done is treat the yard and it is too late in the year to do that now. i have the long, red fleas. They are much worse than the black ones and hard to get rid of.

I've use K9advantix and neither of my dogs have ever had one flea wash off even in the bath and i've never seen one on either of them. I did read a thing about the apple cider vinegar being a good home remedy. But I've never tried it.

Cedar is supposed to be a good repellent...this does not kill fleas just supposed to repel them...Maybe you could buy a cedar filled bed. I have heard of the brewers yeast also and believe it or not garlic....not the clove but powder..I had tried this many years ago for my golden and cocker...I didn't notice that it worked..My vet told me that fleas do not die....ever! they will live in the cracks on floors, in furniture and anywhere their little flea heart desires...they are just dormant in the cold...I HATE those little buggers!

We REALLY have never had to use anything else!

<<We use diatomaceous earth (food grade, not the swimming pool stuff) in the yard and around the outside of the house. It is non toxic and odorless. You should use a mask just while spreading it but after that it is perfectly safe. We have used this for 20 years with all of our dogs and NEVER had fleas or had to use chemicals on our dogs. It gets rid of ticks, ants and other crawling bugs too!
We have never had to use anything indoor or on Lacey, although some people use it both indoors and rubbed carefully into the pets hair...
We buy it pretty inexpensively at our local nursery but here are a couple of links just for more info in case anyone wants to try the chemical free way.

I use 4 -1 Shampoo and Conditioner with EMU oil it kills fleas and but you do have to wash them weekly. ts also make there coat nice and soft I hear alot of show people use it now.

I've never used any kind of flea remedies of any type on buttercup. his vet says that if he doesn't have any than it is best not to use it. :confused:

i also heard lavender is a good repellent.
mix a little in some water and spritz them with it.

where do you purchase this diatomaceous earth? i have googled it and it seems like the s&h costs more than the actual product!!! So they sell it at Lowe's or Ace hardware??? I have been using Frontline on my dogs but I give them a bath at least twice a week because they sleep with me. I have noticed using the Frontline has caused them to get dandruff. i have had the exterminator spray my yard this past spring but we live next in the country and my neighbor has horses, cattle, and goats. The ticks and fleas have been horrible in their yard and they are hopping over onto my property. I was thinking about using the d. earth to line my property line and also around my house but am just trying to find it at a reasonable price. thanks for the tip!!!:D

last week we went to NYC for a taping of the Montel show. It will probably be on next week or the week after but the show was about young inventors. There were 2 sisters on who had invented flea tea which is an all natural product http://www2.sewanee.edu/communications/news?id=15428 I don't know how to order it but it sounds good.
