Tinkerbell got her period!!! I need HELP!!!
 
Tinkerbell started bleeding yesterday and it didn't seem like a whole lot but she does look swollen from down there, it seems she's bleeding a little bit more today, she is 10 months old, does this mean she is in heat? I have a 1 year old maltese and he has in the past tried to hump tinkerbell, but she never lets him, today i noticed she was the one sniffing around his private part, When Should I keep her away? :confused: Could she get pregnant on her first heat and how soon after she started her period?? Help she is my first female dog:confused: Thanks;)

Yes she can concieve in her 1st Season. Most females will not let a dog mount her until she's ready and she could cause him harm. I'd seperate them now, why torture the boy. She will begin flagging him and enticing him real soon. The way it goes is 1 week coming in (bloody show), 1 week in (the time she could concieve) and 1 week going out. So, you have approximately 21 days of her in being in Season.

Thanks, flagging him? I dont understand much but I do understand that she could get pregnant:rolleyes: I got her panties and she keeps taking them off, do the panties help on her not getting pregnant? How could she harm him? sorry for not following:( Thanks

No panties will not prevent her from his breeding her. Flagging means moving her tail to the side to accomidate him. The are a few ways she could harm him. If he attempts to mount her when she isn't ready, she could pounce on him, pin him down and hurt him. Male dogs will not fight back, in this situation. His only concern is to be able to breed her. Another way that she could hurt him. If for some reason, you aren't around and he does succeed in breeding her, she can get evil, and attempt to hurt him then, or during the tie she could drag him around and physically hurt him. So, the best thing to do is seperate them. Any breeding should be done under close supervision and assistance.

Thanks, I got you now:p Well I had done some reading on here about females going into heat but I have no clue. I will do my best to keep them separated, they sleep in different crates so I will watch closely:D Thanks for the info.

You may not have a whole lot of problems this time if your dog hasn't been used for a stud. But, once he's been bred, he'll be a little harder to handle.
Then you'll have to make sure that they are kept in separate rooms. I've heard of dogs climbing over things and breaking legs in attempt to get to a female in Season. The odor the female emits when she's ready can be smelled to great distances.

Diapers and belly bands ARE NOT effective birth control methods. They will take her diapers right off and hike his belly band up - sorry for the visual, but I know from personal experience. I would keep them in separate rooms for the next 3 weeks. It is definitely unadvisable to breed on the first heat.

this is so very true. i thought a belly band and diaper would be a good form of birth control . my husband and i walked in to see kirby's band down toward his bottom.. he was tied to muffie... eventhough we did not want this to happen, it was and still is a wonderful experience having these puppies around. also to let you know, muffie is 2 and was on her 3rd heat and kirby is 1.
so take the advise above about the first heat.....

The rule of thumb is 18 months, preferrably 2 years or 2nd Season.....This allows the female to mature.

I don't know much about this....but know I'd want to be positive they don't mate. Better safe than sorry. I'd keep them apart as long as she's in heat! But then again, I'm chickenchit, and don't want an unplanned preg.

Someoene with more experience will be able to shed more light on this subject.

Yes, for several reasons.....she is still desirable and the stud will continue to mount her. No use aggrivating either one of them. My experience has been my boys are crazier after them been used than before. So, for your sanity as well as theirs, keep them seperated. These are just my experiences in breeding. To me planned breeding is difficult enough without adding any additonal headaches and problems of an unplanned breeding.

Oh goodness of course she can get pregnant. Most breeders are spaying them young so nothing happens like this. I hope everything works our fine.
