Renaming Pitbulls "New Yorkies"
 

I think this is utterly disgusting and ridiculous they want to change the name to something so similar to Yorkies! It had BETTER not catch on! They were named pit bulls for a reason! Not that I dislike all pitbulls, but some of the bad ones (or just bad owners) don't take care of them and don't know how to handle them in public. I wouldn't want any confusion between our beloved Yorkies and them pitbulls!

New Yorkers are renaming the pit bull terrier in an attempt to improve the dog's frightening image.

The city's animal welfare agency has decided to change all its official documents to rename the pit bull the "New Yorkie".

It is hoped that the image change will encourage more people to adopt the thousands of pit bulls taken in by the animal shelter each year.

Ninety per cent of the 6,000 pit bulls taken to the New York City Animal Care and Control centre each year are destroyed.

The name change was the idea of Ed Boks, the new director of the centre.

He said he came up with the idea because New Yorkers, like pit bulls, were often thought of as hard or mean, but are actually "some of the most generous and open-hearted people I've ever met".

While pit bulls have suffered bad publicity following maulings and attacks, the breed is actually well behaved.

Animal experts say pit bulls outperform the cuddly golden retriever on behavioural tests.

San Francisco tried a similar tactic in the 1990s in an attempt to get more people to adopt pit bulls from shelters.

The Californian city called the breed St Francis terriers, but it failed to catch on.

That is indeed DUMB! I hope the name doesn't catch on either. It's too similar to our Yorkies!

This upsets me, too.

First of all, "Yorkie" is already taken. Why don't they use "Bronx Terrier" or "Manhattan Terrier"????

I have never had a good experience with a Pit Bull. In fact, I got bitten by one last year. There is nothing similar between a Pit Bull and a Yorkie except for the fact they are both canine!

I'm sad that so many of them are being put down, but that's no one's fault but the irresponsible owners who fail to get their Pit Bulls neutered.

Well, I wonder what we can do about it. Maybe just spread the word that "YORKIES" are already reserved for Yorkshire Terriers?

Wow, I never even heard of this. Pathetic attempt by the pitbull owners, I think they are trying to ride the "good name" of our Yorkies! Perhaps a petition of some sort could be established by YorkieTalk and we could spread the word?

It is just a fad and wont catch on. Like that burnt out hippie where I live who tried to change "hello" to "heaveno". He said he wanted to take the hell out of the greeting and replace it with a more positive heaven version.

Yorkie is reserved for the little guys.....they don't attack, bite, intimidate, kill, wound or have a bad rep!! (except in Max's dreams :D)

Does it have to be "New York" specific?? If not, wonder how they would like "'Bama Bull Terrier" ... leave out the "Pit"? :confused: Everyone knows how "sweet and genteel" folks from the South are!! ;) Wanna see?? ... Just insult my Yorkie!!! :)

I'm really upset by this. i love pit bulls but i've never heard of a yorkie attacking and killing a little boy or a yorkishire terrier. I agree that pits are some of the sweetest dogs but they aren't like our babies "final" then bad rumors can start spreading about yorkies and so forth. all i have to say is NO NO NO!!!!!!! not to mention the fact that pit bulls aren't from wherever yorkies are from. (where is that again???)

Pitts got their reputation for a reason.

The name "Yorkie is synonomous with cute a sweet for a reason.

Put another name on that dog it is still scary.

I don't think it will catch on. I can spot a pit a mile away. It will always be a Pit to me! But it is a shame that they are trying to change the name to something "cute". :thumbdown It still won't change the image a lot of people have about them. And it's not even the dog's fault!

That is the most inane attempt at "marketing" I have ever heard! Give me a break! I can't believe that in San Fran they had the audacity to try to use St. Francis' name to disguise a pitbull! That actually makes me ill! It won't take! just won't happen!

This is so upsetting. First of all I don't think pit bulls are sweet dogs. Yes most of them have bad owners but Pit Bulls are not exactly a cuddly breed. Why name them after such a sweet breed as Yorkie???

No one in the whole world will ever be able to call a Pitt a 'NEW' anything. No offense to Pitts but they are strong, tough, have a rep... and already HAVE a name - how can anyone in their right mind thing The New Yorkie will ever stick ?

I live in New York City and we have been hearing about this for a while. You can be sure that things the city governments want to do or change are usually very bad ideas. Example: The Olympics in NYC, come on. No one really wants that. This is the same, everyone thinks it is a stupid idea.

Ok so here is my minor rant. I am appologizing in advance. Here in Oklahoma a little boys arm was chewed off by 4 Pits this month he had to have from the shoulder down amputated i feel horrible for this boy but dont blame the breed specifically and dont blame the owner because before being told to he put his dogs down. However this is the stupidist idea i have ever heard of i mean out of the mouths of Animal Control officers around here pits half 1/2 the hold time of normal dogs before they are put down because they do tend to be "Aggressive" if it looks like a pit its a pit no matter what you call it.

This is the silliest thing I have heard. I say just leave their name alone! Most definitely nothing compared to a Yorkie.

That is totally ridiculous! Could we email the person who came up with this idea? I don't mean to offend anyone, but I do not like pit bulls...glad there is a ban in our city and they aren't allowed. To call them yorkies...that should not be allowed. I can't understand how they can do that. If they must change the name, then pick one that isn't already a breed!

That is just idiotic. Do they really think that is going to cure the problem. I mean i like pit bulls and it is not thier fault that they are raised the way the are but come on. So then maybe we should rename manson to snow white and release him cause then he wouldnt be a maniac.

Pit bulls can be too dangerous. They defiently do not need to be confused with something as delicate as a yorkie. I like your names junebug. Bronx terrier- thats a good one.

There has been over 10 pit bull attacks in the San Francisco area in the past month. Just about every night when I watch the news there is a new story.

Here is a story on the front page of the SF Chronicle this morning.

Five pit bulls remained under quarantine Tuesday following separate attacks in which children and other dogs were bitten, authorities said.

All of the incidents occurred within an hour of each other Monday and were the latest in a string of such attacks seen in the Bay Area in recent weeks.

Well calling a Pitt Bull a Yorkie will not make the breed or their rep any more intriguing. Not that I hate Pitt Bulls, their just scary!!

LOL on the Roses - I call the girls 'Roses' ...fluffies - but it makes them no less nuclear....I don't think The New Yorkie is going to fly with the American public...Pitt Bulls are already perfectly named

I agree. That is a very dumb idea. Hopefully NY Yorkie owners will fight that one. NY is hoping, by changing the name, that more Pit Bulls will get adopted. If that happens, then there is just going to be more Pit Bull attacks. Most owners of a Pit Bull haven't got a clue how to train one. They believe that the Pit Bull gives them some kind of power image. I don't believe I have ever read of a YORKIE attack on people. Ankles, maybe !! :rolleyes:
