Hello! I am brand new to this forum and a new yorkie mom. Last month my husband and I rescued a 2 yr. old from a puppy mill. We have named her Lugosi. She was thrown from a car in a heavily populated puppy mill area. Our vet said she recently had a c-section which is probably why she was discarded. She is approximately 2 yrs. old with a few litters under her belt. She is such a love. Slowly she is coming out of her shell. We have had to work with her and give her lots of love. She was welcomed by her new sister, Bella, who is our 1 yr. old miniature dachsund. As you might have guessed my husband is a big fan of Bela Lugosi which is how she got her name. I can use all the help I can from anyone who is willing to give me some advice!

Welcome to YT. What a wonderful person you are to have saved this lil Girl. Sounds like the hard life is over now and she is in wonderful loving home. I can't wait to see pictures of both of your fur babies.:)

Well, the most recent problem is house training. When she came to us she would just go right where she stood. Our dachsund Bella uses puppy pads and I tried training her on those. But she is so fragile and scared it wasn't working well. Now that she has been with us for some time she is starting to get used to her new home. We try to take her outside every hour to potty. She is getting the hang of it but still having lots of accidents when we are not looking. Also when she pees outside she does the strangest thing.....she goes up into a "paw stand" on her front paws.....completely vertical. Is this a yorkie trait??

The stance you are referring to is a female's way of marking. Just give her lots of love and hopefully you can undue all the bad things she has been through. I am sure it is very difficult getting use to a life outside of a 2 foot square cage. I am so glad she found you. It might be a lot of hard work, but I am sure in the end it will be very rewarding. I just figured out how to post pictures! I'm not very computer saavy. I posted them on the my yorkie thread.

After what she has been through, living with you is a complete change for her, for the better of course, but she is going to be confused for a while. With a lot of time and patience, she will be fine. Over time she will feel safer and know she can trust you. Right now she isn't sure of anything.
It does help that you have another little dog she is buddies with. That often makes the transition to her new situation much easier. There is no better dog teacher than another dog and your Doxie sounds like a lovely little soul willing to take in this little waif as well.

I have rescued two yorkies in the past; one a 15 year-old that I swear was a breeder in a puppy mill, but can't confirm it. It took her some time, but I've always had a doggy door and I swear by them. It took Rosebud a couple of months to really get comfortable and come to trust me, but it was worth the wait. You might try training her as you would a puppy, keep her in a small area at first and then slowly enlarge her space. She's so used to being cooped up that it might be stressful for her. Lots of love and attention works the best and it sounds like she's getting just that. Bless your heart for taking her in and best of luck to you.

Awww, that baby is so lucky to have a new home like yours!! It will take time for an adjustment, potty training and all, but will be well worth the time you take with her. She's had an awful start in life, and will take some time in retraining.

I've only been here 2 months, but have learned soooo much I didn't know with my 5 year old. There are some wonderful folks here, that are always willing to share what worked and what doesn't, when it comes to any training issues. Potty training on my new yorkie, has certainly been easier than on my 5 year old.

I've recently learned to use the "search" engine, thats almost below your "welcome name". It has helped me locate older posts which may have the information I'm looking for instead of starting a new thread!

You've certainly come to the right place for help! There has been nothing these folks on YT haven't been able to help me with!

I set up an xpen in my kitchen, where I spend most of my time. I put bed, food and water on one end, and potty pad on the other end. Using a smaller area starting out, has got Venus used to using the pads when she won't tell me she has to go outside. She's now 4 months, and either goes outside, or pads 99% of the time.

Its so sad someone would throw a yorkie out a window because she has to have a c section! Some folks need to be shot!

Try to remember to be very patient with your new dog. When you feel she's making no progress, try to remember she's probaby seen very few people (and they were mean), and haven't been out at all, or only when they were thrown out of a car. She's had a rough start.

Also when she does potty outside, praise her well, and give her a treat! I've kept a baggie of Venus's food, and Adonis's food in my pocket for well over a month (change baggie often, they will blowout). She thinks getting her food, or Adonis's food is a real treat, and will be looking at me, the whole time she's pottying, to see if I'm digging her out a treat! Lots of praise when they do go outside, and a treat works miracles!
