What would you do? Hello everyone :) I'm new here, and this is my first "real" post... I am looking for a pooch, and need a bit of advice, because I have the opportunity to buy one of 3 different dogs, and can't decide  #1 is pretty much just what I want. The gender is right, the age is just about what I wanted, guess on adult weight is right in the middle of the range I'm looking for. I feel at ease talking to the breeder, and feel that if I had any questions or problems I could call for advice. Price is reasonable, but pick up includes a very long drive and would most likely be an all day thing. I don't care about registration... but this pup may come with papers (I haven't asked). #2 is about a 20-30min drive, and less than 1/2 the price of #1. It is not the gender I prefer, but is still a cute yorkie ;) This dog is older, and needs to be re-homed to avoid the pound :( Does not come with papers (again, I don't care but understand that it affects the 'value' of a dog). I'm not sure of the size, still waiting to hear back from my last email. Being a re-home, I am pretty sure that there would not be the same phone help if I needed it (of course I've found Ya'll ;) ) #3 is about an hour away. It is a mixed breed, which I am ok with, but of course would not have papers. This dog is younger than I wanted, just a baby who is just now ready to leave mom. Gender is right, size guess is right. Cost is a little more than dog #2, but still almost 1/2 the cost of #1. It is from a small breeder, I've seen pics of the parents. So, what do you think? ~Jessica |

You need to prioritize which things are most important to you. If having some support is important, I would go with the breeder you feel comfortable with, #1. Re-homing can have it's challenges. Do you know enough about the dog's past to know whether or not you can handle it? A puppy brings it's own challenges. Be prepared for a 24 x 7 committment for the first few months. |
Hi and welcome to you. I would be sure to give this lots of thought and consider all aspects of each puppy and each situation. I think most of the time we all have a "gut" feeling and that is one that usually seems to be the one to go with. Believe you me, I have been struggling myself with sort of a similar situation. It is so difficult but most of the time I think we have to remember to use our heads to think with and not just our hearts. I've had a tug of war situation with my head and heart and think I have finally come to one conclusion (the one my head knew) and now there's just something else I have to decide upon....it's never ending. I do think you should use a reputable breeder and find out everything you can about the pup. Check references if available. Also, a drive should not be the hold-up. Many people take the plunge and travel if there are no puppies to their liking in their area. The trip will be worth it if you do all the checking, etc. first. Always beware of scams and the petstore pups, etc. It's best to be informed and YT is a good place to get started!!! Good luck. |
Well, I am really leaning toward #1. She's the one who fits my idea of perfect more closely than I even thought I'd find. And the drive itself isn't really bothering me, I drove from knoxville TN to Akron OH for a sugar glider, and never regretted it (still in contact with that breeder today). I think what's really getting me, and it's almost silly, is that I wanted to take in a rescue... #1 is an 8 1/2 month old beautiful little girl, who is just over 5lbs now. I know that if I didn't take her, somebody else would and she wouldn't go unloved... #2 is a 4 1/2 year old male. I know that it's harder to find a home for a dog over 4, and for a little boy yorkie. I don't want him to end up at the AS :( I think I would feel guilty, but I really want the little girl... How do you deal with that? Anyone close interested in a little boy? I could put you in contact... and he is REALLY cheap... I just don't want him to go to someone who only buys him because of his pricetag... listen to me, it's not even my dog, lol. |
Sounds like you have already made your choice to me - #1 - you are going to have this dog for a long time so don't let a little inconvenience keep you from getting the one you prefer. The drive home will also be an excellent time to bond with your new baby. |
If I were you, I'd go with #1, but you should do whatever feels right for you. This may be a stupid question, but do you mind if I ask what a 'sugar glider' is? |
Remember this is a long commitment. I'd go with whatever you really want. I too have always considered only females but I found a beautiful boy here and could not resist. I have changed my priorities to #1 breeder support, #2 quality of the pup and lastly the gender ;) Good luck to you and can't wait to see some pics!! |
how about #1 AND #2 :) |
I'd go with #1, personally. But I'm sure if you posted #2 in the section for yorkies needing new homes that someone here could find them a home!! |
Sounds like you really want #1 but the all day trip was your only draw back. Is giving up one day to get the dog of your dreams really that big of a waste? |

My vote goes to #2. :) I have two rescues, and while I adopted them when they were younger (2-years-old and 8-months-old), an adult dog can fit into a new household incredibly well. This past summer I had a Yorkie X foster who was anywhere from 3 - 9-years-old, probably around 7-8, and she fit in wonderfully. You just can't explain the feeling you get when you're lying there with a dog curled up beside you...and you know that you saved that dog's life and gave it a chance that it never had before. Of course, if he's not what you want and you won't be completely happy, then it might not be the best decision. I had to look for a long time when I was adopting a second dog to find just the dog I was looking for and I couldn't be happier :). Whatever you decide, good luck!!! |
My heart says no. 2 as well. Considering a Yorkie's life span, it is relatively young, young enough to adjust for sure. I would guess that if it is a rescue, it will come already neutered. That is the usual procedure, I believe. Good luck to you and your choice.:) |
