No Puffballs! On our local Maine news this morning, they were warning dog owners not to let their dogs eat puffballs, round brown mushrooms that are black inside. There is a bumper crop of all kinds of mushrooms this year due to an above normal rainfall. These puffballs will give them diarrhea, vomiting, and may even cause liver and kidney damage or death. Higgins has already played with them! When he's not playing with acorns (also poisonous) or rocks......So far, so good, but we are restricting his outdoor play a lot more. And then there are the owls! We just do not take him out after dark and encourage him to use a pee pad inside. |
 Thanks, Mary Ellen!!! Didn't know acorns were poisonous! hmmmm ... about that "mighty oak" that the storm didn't take out?!!! There are millions of acorns in our yard ... if it weren't for sturdy St. Augustine grass we wouldn't have a lawn! I believe I have seen the mushrooms you described too! I learn something new every day! Thanks again! ;) |
Don't panic, though. Animals seem to know what is good for 'em and what isn't. We have MILLIONS of acorns in our yard and while Higgins will pick 'em up and play with 'em and chew on 'em a little, I have never seen him EAT one. Since he was a baby, he has only had one bout of sickness....a 24 hour thing.....vomiting and diarrhea. And just as I was about to take him to the vet, he was FINE, thank you very much. So I don't know what it was. Like I said, he loves to chew on stuff, but seldom eats anything, so I don't worry too awful much. We keep a pretty close eye on him. |
Hi Mary Ellen!! Glad Higgins is careful what he eats! There was a post on YD (I think it was YD) re acorns, from what I remember it's the shell that is poisonous? I used to get frantic when Gypsy Rose had things in her mouth (still do actually!) but realised like you that she rarely ate anything, just likes to wind me up I think so that I chase her!! Little Gizzie is following in her footsteps too! Re the puffballs they are pretty poisonous for humans too!! Luv, Ana xx |
I hadn't heard such a thing, we have some acorns in our yard, and Yoda loves to chew up wood/acorns/wood chips! I'll be sure to keep a look out more when he's out in the yard! THANKS for the warning Higgin's Mom! |
Sure this topic is currently shown on YD but----guess what I can't check that for you ---'cos it's DOWN again LOL!! I'll get back to you when it comes back again!! Ana xxx |
Being that Arkansas has been in a major drought and Florida has not shared any of their not wanted or need rain we have not seen any "puff-balls" or anything growing/alive in our yard. Thanks though so much for the heads up on it. Schatzie is a grasshopper eating fool. I try so hard to get them outta her mouth but oh those little jaws are strong, my goodness!! I think she has eaten atleast 10 since we've owned her. So far, no illness from any bugs!! Those we sure do have out here!!! Oh and crickets too - her favorite and right up there with the grass hoppers. Luckily they will be dying off soon due to winter coming. The cats outside like to "show their prize" of half eaten moles/mice and leave them on the porch and thank goodness Schatzie wont pick those up in her mouth. That I would think would make her deathly ill. |
