How do you train a Yorkie on Car Trips? Bentley does not care for car rides he pants very heavy and sticks his tounge out and Im affraid that it is bad for him. is there a way to train him to like the car ride or will he always be that way? |
When we first got Topher at 16 wks old, he just hated going in the car and would get the exact same way...panting and just not happy to be there. I still took him everywhere with me...errands, etc., and now he's almost a year old and he LOVES going in the van. He sits in his car seat and looks out the window and when he gets tired he'll have a nap (though this doesn't happen too often as it seems he hates to miss anything ;)) I think if you just give it time and take him on lots of short trips, he will probably get used to it. |
You train them for car rides by starting to take them on short, short rides when you first get them. You can take them to quiet places, such as parks, etc...Then just keep increasing the time and take them to new places as time goes on. Is yours still a tiny baby? They also have nausea medicine you can give them, but I've never had any that needed it. Muffin got car sick when she was tiny. She'd throw up every time we got in the car for awhile. Just kept taking her and it went away. She loved to go for rides. Just don't feed them for a couple of hours before you put them in the car until you are sure they won't get car sick. |
romeos first time in my car he puked.. he did not like the car at all. i bought him a look out carseat so he would feel safe and secure. i started taking him on little rides a few times a week. then we started taking longer road trips. now he loves the car. when i let him out he runs to the car and wants to get in and go for a ride. i think they just need to get used to it and feel safe. panting & sticking out their tongue is ok. just make sure you offer plenty of water. if he starts to foam it's a sign of dehydration. |
Thanks so much I was afraid I was pushing it and it might be bad for him but now that I know it's okay if her pants Im going to start taking him on some short runs. Thanks so much for the adivice. |
Don't worry...Bentley will get used to it... [FONT="Arial Narrow"]Don't worry ...Bentley will get used to it. We started our two furbabies on car rides as soon as we took them home at three months old. They of course got sick everytime we would take them but I was always ready with lots of plastic bags, paper towels, and baby wipes . It took almost two months for them to be free of car sickness. They got used to how my husband drives ;) like a Nascar Driver;) and to all kinds of road conditions. The passenger seats of our Supercrew Cab Truck is their travelling hotel. We put the seats down, line the entire back section with a thick blanket, with their doughnut bed in one corner. We travel like this all the time. We've taken them with us to Yosemite, Sequoia, Mt. Ranier, Capitol Reef, Bryce, Zion, Arches, Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu. Practically everywhere we could take them and it made all our trips more enjoyable...less stress for us all...stress of leaving them behind. Goodluck on training Bentley. Just remem:thumbup: ber not to give up.[/F |
I feel so much better knowing it won't hurt him and hearing your stories Thanks. |
My dogs pant in the car sometimes --- but not because they don't like riding in the car -- they love it. If we're going to be in the car very long - I always take water for them - Mine ride in "Lookout seats" which are in the back seat. And, they have never been allowed to ride in the front - so, they don't even ask. They love their carseats. And -- both my dogs are good about riding in the car. They almost never bark - they stay in their seats (although often I look back and they are both in the same one). They lie down, curl up, and sleep in their carseats a lot too. Another thing I really like about these seats is that whenever I take them with me in someone else's car -- I put these car seats in the other car - and never have to worry about them hurting or doing any damage to another person's car. Have fun! Carol Jean |
