how active should a 14 month old yorkie be? i just bought this male yorkie 6 days ago, i am wondering how active should he be. he is eating, drinking and seems to be fine, but as soon as he is done he jumps on thecouch and wont leave it. he wont play on the floor. just does not want to leave the couch. does anyone know how many hours he should be sleeping. i am taking a urine sample tomorrow morning, it looks a bit like the orangish color. does anyone think he is sick? i just bought him and he is such a doll. thanks to any help at all. |
It just depends on alot of different things...Most yorkies are very active but some are really layed back...How long have you had him, he could still be a little scared...:) |
What was his life like before you got him? If he wasn't exercised for the first year of his life, he could be kinda lazy. And Peanut may be right, he may still be a little scared of his new surroundings. I'll bet he'll warm up to you in no time. See if you can get him on a regular walk schedule. Also, make sure you have a lot of different kinds of toys, chew toys, squeaky toys, etc. |
It sounds like he is still very scared! Diesel was very scared and shy fora good month or 2. When we brought him home I mainly held him all the time because he was so scared. When he finally came out of his shell he would play. However, he was never very active as a pup. He is almost 15 months old and he is more active now that he was as a pup. I still consider him to be very laid back tho. He is perfectly happy to be curled up around me. He will play and will play HARD when he is in the mood.LOL Give him some time he may just need a little extra time to come out of his shell. Good luck |
I'm afraid the answer is, "however active he wants to be." I have a one-year-old little guy that is the most laid-back dog in the world. Of course, he plays his little heart when it's time to play, but he's not a barker and loves to lie around, take naps, and chew on his favorite toys. Seems like evenings are the times he wants to play-play-play. Then - there is a little 5-year-old Yorkie a few houses away from me that is a nonstop terror on wheels. He has never settled down. His owner is always telling me that she would sure like to trade dogs. So - the end result is that there is no steadfast rule - dogs are just different. Carol Jean |
We take loooooooong walks and play, play, play! Kacee will be 18 months on the ninth. It does take time to make an adjustment and as someone mentioned previously, it depends on what his life was like before you got him. You might try getting on the floor (at his level) with a ball or other toy and see if you can get him interested. Try carrying him around, even outside, and see if he doesn't become bonded to you and understands that he is safe with you. |
how active should a 14 month yorkie be life before me was with a breeder who has like 15 yorkies , so when i went there only the moms and pups were in their cages, everyone else was loose in a gated area. he was running around with the rest of them ,like 10 yorkies, playing, running, jumping. the breeder told me she had too many males, and he was so loveable, running over to me and jumping in my lap. he has never been in a car, so the car ride home was a bit crazy, he was very nervous. also he has never been walked on a leash, so this is scary for him. so he has never taken a walk,i try to take him out noweveryday for a little walk, but he is absolutly terrified and cant wait to get home. he likes the couch and wont leave it unless he is hungry or thirsty. he sleeps alot, which i thought older dogs did. he sleeps through the night and then right back to sleeping after he wakes up and eats. i am having his urine tested today, i do not like the looks of it. too orange. i took him to the vet the same day i got him, but he never told me to bring in a stool sample or urine from him. |
I think you little guy will come out of his shell sooner than later. I just bought a little girl that was 7 months old and I was so worried that something was wrong with her because she just would not do anything but sit next to me on the couch too. This is all going on while my other little boy who is a month older than her is bouncing off the walls. I have had her about 7 weeks now and I must say she is one playful little girl. Not as much as my boy but she has finally come out of her shell. She LOVES to chase toys and my little boy yorkie around the house. So I think it will just take time and you will see. You have to remember when you get a Yorkie like we both did - they have been used to a certain life style already so it takes them some time to adapt to the new life style you are giving them. Who knows I am sure my little Mia was thinking - where am I? :) |
I think he just needs time to adjust from his old home. Sounds like he had a lot of playmates and maybe just missing them a little right now. He will get better. |
