2 lumps on puppy Hey all, My husband and I went out of town this weekend and my mom kept my dogs. She called me and told me that she was rubbing Dixie's belly and noticed a "lump" about the size of the pad of your thumb. She said that it looked like it was under the skin, however, there was some blood around that area. When I picked the dogs up today, I noticed another lump (a little smaller and no blood) on her side (more on her back, than her belly). The one on her belly, I wouldn't say it was on her belly, more on her undercarriage around her rib area. It doesn't seem to be tender or anything when I touch it. Trying to figure out what it could be? Any suggestions or guesses? Dixie is 6 months old, up to date on all shots. Do you think it could be worms or something? Thanks! Melanie |
It could be a spider or a bee bite, but I'll check with your vet anyway. |
A tick possibly? |
Shots It could just be the spots where she got her shots. They sometimes takes a couple of weeks to go away. |
Thanks for the responses! I took Dixie in to her vet yesterday afternoon. I would never in a million years would have even thought that it was what they had found! Read with caution. It is so gross. I am beside myself with what they told me it was and have never ever heard of such a thing. It was what they call "cuturebrae" (don't know the exact spelling). It basically means fly larvea!!! The lump on her back had a small, perfectly formed hole in the middle of it. They first thought it was a puncture wound of some sort, but the vet said that he thought it might be something else. He made a little nick to widen the hole and inside was a fly larvae!!!! I freaked!! He said it is actually quite common for this time of year. It's getting colder and flys will flock to the dog for warmth, lay eggs, the egg will hatch and to survive, the larvae will burrough down under a dog's skin. The hole was the air hole. She had two, the one on her back and then they pulled out another one on her belly!! I feel like such a terrible mom. How in the world could she possibly get these?? I mean, we do NOT have any flies anywhere!! Our yard is cleaned and picked up twice a week, so no flies around the poop. She is only outside to go potty and play for a little bit twice a day and then brought back inside. The vet said that all it takes is one fly. Dixie was a total trooper and even after the vet cut her, she didn't flinch and continued to give him kisses. She is doing fine, but is on antibiotic for 10 days to prevent and cure any infection! I, on the other hand, am not doing so good. I just can't understand how or where this could have happened. She isn't outside but for just a little bit each day. I feel like a terrible mom:cry: |
Oh my goodness, at least you caught it early enough and got her to the vet. Don't feel like a bad Mom you got her help. I have never heard of this either on a dog, I have on horses. You got her fixed up that is all that matters. Repeat after me "your an awesome Mom"! Keep your chin up and give her a little extra loven! |
I've heard of this before ... but with maggots!! Just do a search and you'll see what I mean! At least you caught it and your little girl is ok!! |
I've never heard of this before either. Thankfully she is OK and you shouldn't blame yourself! It could happen to anyone's dog. Thanks for the post. It's something else for us to be aware of. :) |
Fly larvae and maggots are the same thing. |
Don't feel like a bad mom! That same thing happened to my Maddie this summer and also to 2 other yt dogs! I'd never heard of it before either and I also freaked when my vet pulled that gross thing out of her! I'm so glad Dixie is okay now and this is just unbelievable to me...something I've never heard of has now happened to 4 yt dogs! Maddie sends kisses to Dixie! |
Thank you so much for your post letting me know that others have experienced this with their yorkies. I just hate that others had to go through this, but it makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one! I, too, have had a hard time grasping the whole thing. It is just so unbelievable!! Tell Maddie thank you for the kisses!! :) |
