Driving with a yorkie... I am just wondering what is the best way to drive with a yorkie in the car? We have been using her little crate, but my mom just bought us one of those amazingly cute vera bradley pet porter bags. If that is buckled up in the back seat, is that an ok subsitute to the crate? thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice! :) |
Is there an actual slot on the bag for the seat belt to slide through? If so, then this is a good method. You ideally also want some kind of tether from the bag to your baby. It is my understanding that using the crate is not the best method of transportation as the crate needs to be buckled in, but in the event of an accident your baby could still be thrown around inside. There are several types of doggie car seats available. Sissy uses one and many here use them. I feel for us, this is the safest way to transport as this is the sole use for the item. |
We have a doggie car seat. She's not too happy in it...but, I wouldn't travel without it, now. |
We drive with two yorkies, and they are each in their Lookout Car seat. They love it because they can each see out the window. It gives me peace of mind and I can concentrate on driving instead of worrying about what they are up to in the back seat.:) :aimeeyork |
I suggest a car seat that is securely attached with a tether to your baby's harness. Gracie and I have had several close calls. One time, I had her in her carrier sitting on the passenger seat. I slammed on the breaks and she and her carrier went flying, landing on the floor. The second time she was in her car seat with the tether attached to her harness. She got upset and wanted on my lap, crawled out of the car seat and almost hung herself to death. I did not have the tether adjusted to the correct length. The last time, she was in her car seat but I forgot to tether her. I slammed on the breaks and, you guessed it, she went flying. I don't plan on there being a fourth time. I have learned my lesson and so has she. Gracie is now well behaved and lays down in her car seat!. |
2 Attachment(s) We have a console lookout car seat for LILO. she loves it most of the time!!! Except when she decides that she wants to look out the window!!! LOL, but for car rides... the long and the short ones....it's perfect. here are few picks for you |
thanks for the advice! i will look into the car seats...when we do use the crate we buckle it in so she doesnt slide around, and she doesnt seem to mind it. but i would love for her to be able to look out the window, and the car seat seems perfect! i was going to wait till she was a little older for it, but its def something to look into! thanks again! |
Adonis has been riding in his car seat for about 3 years now! I just got one for Venus the other day, but I haven't tried her in it yet. The car seats are high enough for them to look out the window, which Adonis loves to do! They have an attachment so you can buckle thier leash to also. Adonis rides in his from Mobile, AL to Austin Tx. I throw some treats in there for him to find later, and have a pillow in it for him to sit on too. He does great in it, and has since day 1 of traveling back in 02. I do have a shoulder strap carrier for him cause we got kicked out of a gas station one trip, with him in my arms. I was also told at a rest stop that he couldn't go "in" with me to potty. I was steaming mad, and told Adonis "least one of us got to pee!" Thats when I got the shoulder carrier for the next trip. I love the car seat and so does Adonis. Its easy to put up and take down too. I keep it behind the front seat when he's not with me. |
please use a carseat or another safe alternative i use a look out carseat 4 romeo. he loves it. he hops right in on his own. we were in a very serious car accident where our car was totalled. romeo just hopped out of his carseat in perfect condition. not a scratch. the paramedics were amazed. |
1 Attachment(s) Topher has an Outward Hound carseat that he just loves. It took him a bit to get used to it, but he won't ride anywhere else now. I think it's because he feels safe in it. He used to ride in a hard sided carrier which was attached to the seat with the seatbelt, but I was always afraid that he'd get hurt being tossed around in there if there were an accident. The Outward Hound was very inexpensive. |
I have that same outward hound one too! I really like it. Just a question, though...do any of you guys get made fun of for your doggie car seat like I do? I take constant ribbing for it...I don't care, just wondered if any if ya'll get teased? Even my husband, who loves the babies as much as me, kinda teases me about it:rolleyes: |
Hubby teased me when I first got it but now he loves it just as much as I do 'cause he sees that Topher sits happily and quietly while we're driving. But yes, I do get ribbing from friends...mostly those who don't have pets. Those who do have dogs think it's a great idea. |
Decent price on the Lookout? Does anyone know where to get the Lookout car seat for a decent price? I've been using a harness that buckles in through the seat belt, but Howie gets himself all twisted up in it. All of the Lookout seats I've seen are close to $100!! Even on ebay! |
