i just want to point out im not having a go at people who have little ones and im not saying big ones are better, i have a little one who is over weight at the moment but whens shes lost the weight she will be about 6 pound, i have 2 middle sized yorkies who are about 10 pound and i also have a large yorkie who at the moment is 14 pound but is still gaining, so i have all the sizes of yorkie and not one size is better than the other. its only about health not anything else why im saying all this and if someone can come on here and say no its better for the breed to be small and there are no health problems with having a small yorkie then i will say im wrong and eat my hat. oh hang on i havent got one:rolleyes: :p lol |
IMO, health goes back to nethical breeders breeding down to get smaller dogs and more $$$, not anything to do with what the standard is. I don't think that anyone would argue that the smaller, from miller dogs are more likely to have health problems. But that's going back to the breeder. I don't see where changing the standard is going to deter this...they don't follow the standard now, why would they follow it if it were changed? |
A Yorkie is a Yorkie! A Yorkie is a Yorkie and a Silky is a Silky......they are 2 different breeds! Why get a Silky when you want a Large Yorkie? They shouldn't change the Standard at all IMO. Too bad we can't educate the Public and too bad we can't STOP irresponsible Breeding! It's called Supply & Demand and unfortunetely that causes ridiculous sky high prices, that's what the market is. When a Breed gets Popular it gets over Bred and more Genetic defects show up; poor Health, bad conformation, unsound temperments w/c result in unstable, insecure Dogs! As much as we fall in Love with our Babies they still are Dogs, A Yorkie should look and behave like a Yorkie and there should be NO Doubt that they are Yorkie's. Too bad we can't enforce the Standard? I have 2, Artie is according to the Standard over weight @ 8 lbs. and Abigail is 7 lbs. but they are both very muscular since they are exercised 2 times per day and fed a high grade Dogfood. They both have different bone structures too! Artie is Stocky and Abigail is long & lean, one is not better than the other they just serve different puposes, she's a Marathon Runner, while he's a Sprinter. Regardless of their sizes it all boils down to what you prefer and your Lifestyle? All Yorkies are unique and different from each other, but they are all the same in many ways too. |
But how are yorkies and silkies THAT different from each other? They look almost exactly alike, enough so that it's almost impossible to tell the difference between one and a larger yorkie. And all terriers have that wonderful terrier personality that we all love. Even silkies, though, are only supposed to be 8-10 lbs. I, too, am not "having a go" at those with larger yorkies. I think larger yorkies are ADORABLE, and my Kiki is still growing and may end up being a teapot herself. :p But I just don't think they should deliberately bred for. There are too many adorable larger yorkies sitting in shelters just waiting to be loved, because they weren't what their owners wanted or expected when they bought a "yorkie". |
