I Really Don't Know What To Do
 

With Jazzy! Everytime I open my door she goes flying out! I live on a main street in an apt. I just opened the door this morning and she flew out. I wasn't even dressed. I was screaming at the top of my lungs. I told my son to go get her and he's like O I have to put something on my feet! I said F your Feet get outside. Lucky one of my neighbors saw her and brought her back for me. I was soooooooooooooo mad and I still am!

Easiest question that has ever been posted. Have a crate ready by your door, BEFORE you open the door tuck her in the crate and make sure the crate door is closed. Once you close the door, let her out again. If you don't, you have the risk of a dog run over by a car.
Some dogs do this, it isn't unusual. It is therefore up to you to make sure she is safe.

That should have read "once you close the door to the outside world, open the crate door and let her out again"

I live on the third floor of a condo and when we first got jasmine she would run out the door if you were coming home or going out but my boyfriend worked with her and now all he has to do is say no and she stops in her tracks but i think its because hes a mail she kinda listens to me but definately listens to him maybe you could think about getting a baby gate or something to put in front of the door? then you wouldnt have to worry about them getting out.

That sounds really scary. Mine jolted out of the gate a few times but hasn't done it lately. I haven't had to worry about her much lately since she has a 6 week old litter and I think that helps. Don't know if she'll try again once they're gone, but I'm hoping she's calmed down a little. The crate thing sounds good, or you might keep a leash by the front door to put on her before you open. Have a training session every day with her using her leash. Put her on the leash, open the door, when she bolts snag her back and tell her no and stay and then praise, do this a bunch of times every day. I did this with both my girls. Or you can leave her leash on her all day letting her just drag it around.

K.C. is bad about doing this too. He only runs to the front sidewalk and pees on each bush, but it still worries me. I usually just pick him up before opening the door. What's funny is that he won't do it if my husband opens the door and if he runs out and my husband happens to be in the front - he makes a quick U-turn and runs just as fast back in! So I guess they know what they can get away with and push the limits!

Jazzy is such a cutey pie.I bet she is the talk of the neighborhood with being so gorgeous.I do know what you mean when you have a dog that is faster than a flying dart when they see that door handle opening up,they are right their ready to make their move so I block my dogs back with a big purse or briefcase when I enter or leave my house.Cathy and Yoshi:aimeeyork

I haven't taught my dog much - but one of the first things I taught him (easily) was to stay back whenever I open the door.

Whenever he went to the door with me - I simply got between him and the door and walked him back about 10 feet...and firmly told him to stay. Then when I went back toward the door - if he even looked like he was going to move - I'd tell him to stay again. If he broke toward the door - I'd move him back again (with my feet) and we'd start over. Whenever he came toward me - instead of my going toward the door - I would turn and move toward him and him back again.

For some reason - he learned to stay back almost immediately.

I'm sure it's my body language that was most effective. My moving him away from the door with my feet -- my holding my hand up in the "stay" position - and the firm tone of my voice telling him to stay everytime he even thought about coming toward me.

I think teaching your dog to stay back when you open the door will solve 90% of your problems -- but because we are dealing with a little dog who might easily surprise us and bolt -- be prepared for that too. I am always still facing him and watching him whenever I open the door.

You could tether her before going to the door, or just keep her on a leash and harness all the time so you can grab the leash when you go to the door.

Thanks everyone! I feel like such a dork. I wrote this question and never even came back until today to look at the respones. Since then I have set up her Xpen by the door. It's one that folds a lot of ways so I have it going the long way blocking the door entrance. Jazzy would also tear my mail up by the time I came home so now I can come home to some untorn mail.
