Is it to soon to leave my pup.... Hello everyone...I am new to Y.T....I have a 3 month old yorkie male named chopper I have had him for a little over a month and he is very spoiled ....I am going on a 7 day cruise this coming month on the 15th and I was wondering if it is to soon to leave him?.....I have been looking into boarding through my local vet but I am scared & worried to leave him for 7 days and that he might forget who I am ...if that makes any sense...I also heard that Petsmart has a pet hotel has anyone ever used them....Please anything would help.... |
Hi although I dont own a pet yet :( (trying my hardest to find a reputable breeder in va area) I dont think that your baby will forget you in any way. Is he around you 24/7? 7 days isn't long, but I can only imagine if when I get my baby how it would feel to leave him/her for 7 whole days and nights....sorry I can't be much of any help. :) |
I know some boarding facilities won't accept a pet without all vaccines, and at 3 months he still needs his boosters... the last one is around 4 months of age (?). Also, they'll want the kennel cough shot which not all vets give in the set. Maybe you have some family or friends that would be happy to dogsit your little one? |
I most certainly would not board a puppy that is that young. Do you have a friend or family that can watch your baby while you are gone? Your baby won't forget you, not to worry! |
I don't think any of the boarding places will take a dog before he has had all his vaccines including rabies. My regular boarding facility would not take my 13 week old. My husband and I had planned a trip to Jamaica for our 25th wedding anniversary. Most vets that offer boarding will take the younger pups though. I had to leave mine when he was 13 wks old and the girls at my vets office spoiled him rotten while I was gone. I was so glad that he got some extra attention while I was gone. I think it was easier to leave him when he was that age then it is now. I am so much more attached to him now. |
Maybe the breeder could take him back for the week. |
Not any family or friends that you can trust with him? It's going to mess up his potty training, too, IMO. And, no, he won't forget you. But, I will say this, you should not have gotten that pup and then planned the vacation. This is a very, very important time in his life for socialization and training. |
Thanks for all of the advice......I just wanted to say that I didn't plan this cruise it was kind of a surprise for me.....thanks again for the advice...I think I am going to let my sister in law care for him....maybe that would be best |
Too bad you didnt live closer. I'd pupsit for you..Im home all day too! :):D |
That sounds like a good plan. And make sure to have a ton of fun on your cruise!! |

I am in Texas maybe Rocky and I can watch him for you!!! I personnally would not feel comfortable boarding a pup at that age, but I know sometimes you just have to do what you have to. I hope you SIL can watch him. And don't worry he will not forget you. I had to leave Rocky when in was 8 months and I left a T-shirt with my scent on for him to sleep with. You will have a blast on the cruise. I actually went on two this year, and both times were very enjoyable. Have Fun!!!! |
