I have an idea but need an opinion
 

my 1 year old yorkie mix is having a very bad crate problem. he continually goes in their and when he does we take him out to clean it. I need an opinion to try. Just as many of you may know when you crate a new puppy overnight he cries for you to come. i think my dog is urinating and sometimes fecaling in there so we take him out also. Next time he goes when he cries should i leave him in there and let enoughbtime pass untill i feel i can clean the crate and give him a shower?

Why are you keeping him crated when you are home and awake?

Just so I'm clear, do you leave him in the crate all the time, or are you talking about at night? If he's in there during the day and crying, he may be trying to let you know he has to go potty. You may be leaving him in too long.

The only thing I can think of is to put a box or something in his crate overnight which will only allow him enough room to turn around and lay down. Maybe then he won't potty in the crate. But, if he's crying you may want to try taking him out (or put him on his pee pad, depending on which method you use) and see if that's why he's crying.

Have you had this yorkie since it was a puppy? If so, perhaps you need to re-think what you are doing. Apparently, crate training isn't working for you.

Is your doggy housebroken when not in the crate?? I dont crate my dogs so I just dont know what to say? How long is he in there for? Do you only crate him at night? What size is his crate? Hmmmm guess thats enough questions for now...

well i have thought about not crating him at all like somepeople do but then how do i know what hes doing. when he is in the crate i know he is safe. Sometimes i will take him outside he will pee and then if he is placed in the crate will pee and cry again. For the idea of not crating him how did u guys train them and are you home all day?

I read another post where someone suggested to take away their food and water a couple hours before you crate them for the night. That will give them enough time to relieve themself before they have to be in there for 8 hours.

Crate training didn't work me for at all. 1) I didn't have the heart for it - If I'm home I want Howie with me and 2) Howie is not the kind of dog who likes to be confined if he knows someone is home.

I work 8:30 - 5 and Howie is home by himself in the morning and I leave him in his crate to go back to sleep. At lunch I come home, give him lunch, let him potty (I use potty pads) and put him in his xpen for the afternoon. I leave a potty pad in there but he never needs to go. When I get home at night I take him into the kitchen and feed him, right afterwards we go for about a 20-30 minute walk and he's recently started going #1 and #2 on our walks. For the rest of the night we usually hang out in the living room. I have what I like to call "Puppy Pad Country" which is an entire corner of my living room carpeted with pads. Howie goes right over to them and potties. The second he's done he gets his favorite type of treat and he ONLY gets it when he potties correctly. Howie sleeps in bed with me and if he has to go in the middle of the night he'll jump off the bed and head for a potty pad I have down in the bedroom.

Do what works best for your lifestyle and what your gut tells you is right for you and your puppy. All of the other "by the book" methods I tried didn't work for us. And be sure to stress routine and praise!

I didnt crate train Buddy, but it was easier for me because i'm home with him. I found i just watched him like a hawk and when he started to sniff around grabbed him and took him in the garden.
I'm confused by crate training, is it just at night? or all day aswell if someone works?

i considered crating oscar.. but he hated it so much that i went against it. hes trained now just from me watching him constantly and taking him out as soon as he started sniffing.he gets a treat everytime he potties outside. he knew what was right and what was wrong. dogs always want to please so he never wanted to go inside the house. i have the privledge of taking him whereever i go.. but occasionally i do leave him in his cage for awhile. he really doesnt have a problem with it.. i would suggest leaving him out of his crate and seeing if hes happier.

I'm confused as to when your baby is in the crate. Could you be a little more specific as to how long he's in there on an average day?

The only time he is in their is when we cant keep a close eye on him this is throughout the day and mornings also. We will take him out and he will go andsometimes need to put him back in the crate and then he will go in their.

i also heard that for crate trianing to be succesfull the doggie must only be able to comfortably turn around and lay in the crate. if its too big they will go to the poddy since they know they can get away from it. but i dont have personal experience, crate training was hard for me cause i couldnt stand my babys crys. so i bought a baby gate and closed off our living room and just kept a pee pad in the living room until he was trained. good luck

I'm a big fan of crate training as it's for way more than just potty training. Ferdinand was horrible - it was like he was going through his terrible twos for the past month. We talked to his trainer and she recommended crarte training. At first we tried putting him in there in our bedroom at night with a night light. That failed miserably as he NEVER stopped barking. After a week of that, we put his crate in the laundry room with a towel over the sides (so he still had air flow from the front) and turned on the fan for white noise. I put pee pad, folded to fit, on his chenille pad on the floor of his crate in case he has an accident. He doesn't ever bark in there anymore and is being really good about going outside. The crate is an XS crate, so he just has enough room to turn around and stand up. Whenever we take him out of his crate, we immediately take him outside.

His trainer also said that if he's really bored he'll have "selective listening" and "selective learning" problems. So we got him a couple puzzle toys to keep his mind stimulated and take him on 30 minute walks, and also try to take him one new place (like Home Depot, etc) every day. Since we started doing all this, he has been like a dream and doing WAY better. I was always told not to take him on walks until he was vaccinated which is why he wasn't going on walks before, but I found out he's vaccinated enough to be fine around other dogs.
