When i can i bathe him/her? Whats the proper age for his/her first ""shower":-) thanks |
I bathed my puppy for the first time at 14 weeks. She had already had a bath at the breeders before that time ;) |
reply Im asking because we got a 7 week old pup just yesterday and the breeder told us to wait until atleast may10th for her first bath. She doesnt really stink or anything, but part of the fun is bathing your dogs and grooming them:-) thanks |
I started bathing Oreo when he was 9 Weeks old. and he did fine, now i bathe him every week, sometimes 2-3 times a week :) |
7 weeks is really young for a puppy. It is so important when they are that young to make sure they stay warm at all times. The chill from a bath could be enough to make them sick. I wouldn't risk it. How much does your puppy weigh? Is he a larger pup? |
reply well as of right now, i dont know how much she weighs. I know that shes probably going to be 6 lbs as an adult |
I bathed mine at 8 1/2 weeks a couple of days after I got her. I have a tremendous prob. She bathes fine and even blow dries fine but when I try to put the eardrops and her shirt on she has a heart attack. She bites me and makes my hands bleed. I don;t know what to do, it makes me so mad. Please help! |
Well my breeder said, after her first shots, it shouild be okay to bathe her. is this right? |

Hope this helps. |
I think the sponge baths are a good idea until they are at least ten weeks. If you do it earlier just make sure you are in a warm room and you blow dry immeditely after removing them from the water. If the adult weight will be 6 lbs the puppy is probably 2 lbs now and they are just so susceptibel to so many "bugs" if their immune system is compromised so I think it's wise to wait. |
I got Lady when she was 7 weeks old and I bathed her the same day I got her.I put a small heater in the bathroom and made sure she couldent catch a chill,I dried her properly before letting her out and she was fine. She has a bath once a week ever since then:) Lady already had 2 shots when I got her so I was allowed to bathe her, infact she had already been bathed once when I got her.I got Jess at 8 weeks old and bathed her the very same day too and she was also fine, she had already been bathed before too so it wasnt anything new to either of mine. Both Lady and Jessies breeders (who are sisters) start bathing at 6 weeks old one week after their pups first set of shots. |
What idiot let you take a puppy at 7 weeks old? That isn't even legal for regular puppies, much less tiny breeds! I know you didn't know better, but the breeder should have! |
Thats common here, all breeds are allowed home a couple of weeks after their first set of shots which takes places when they are 5 weeks old.I had never heard of a pup going home at 12 weeks,I guess its different in certain places. A friend of mine has 3 chihuahuas and she brought them all home at 6 weeks with no problems and all dogs are let go at around that age here, its just the norm.I actually preffere them coming home at 7 to 8 weeks because thats what Im used to and Iv never heard of anyone having problems due to this..after all,if it was so dangerous or risky breeders would have stopped doing it years ago.If they are still dong it its because they arent having problems and neither are the new owners:) |
Where are you located? |
Im in Majorca,Spain:) |
Oh nevermind! I see you are in Spain! Most of us here in America think the puppies should stay with the mother longer. |
Yes,I know that now;) I started on American yorkie forums shortly after I got Lady over a year ago.American breeders do alot of things differently and I find it interesting to read about how this sort of thing in other countries works:) Here puppies are weaned at about 4 weeks old and I know that in America they wait longer, also we arent encouraged to spay or neuter so finding a vet that will do it just because is also quite difficult here espcially if the dog is very small..alot of things change.I had to search high and low to get Lady spayed because her size seemed to be a problem and I couldent find a vet that wanted to do it..they all wondered why on earth I wanted to spay her. |
We have a condo in Mexico and the Mexican people feel the same way about neutering! The stray population is a big problem there. I learned my lesson about rescuing strays after I got ringworm from one and then he decided he wanted to go back to the streets anyway! LOL I still see hijm sojmetimes and he still comes up to say hello! LOL |
I think the reason most reputable breeders don't allow puppies to leave earlier than 12 weeks is that there are significant health issues that young, immature yorkies have that only an experienced breeder is capable of handling when they occur. Yorkies are still so fragile even at 12 weeks and they need constant 24/7 care. I can't imagine getting my babies before they were even eating solid food. Of course, it's less expensive for the breeder the shorter time they have the puppies and have to care and feed them, but the socialization aspects are so important too. I make the analogy of being sent to a boarding school as an elementary school age child. You are away from your mother and your siblings and you don't really learn the things your mother is supposed to teach you. Having a puppy with it's mother and littter mates during those early weeks is crucial to proper socialization in my opinion. Sometimes mothers die in child birth, or abandon their babies, and there is sometimes only one in a litter, so there are different circumstances that occur where taking the puppy away early is unavoidable. |
I got Gucci when she was 12 weeks old. At first I used the doggy wipes to clean her. I gave her her first bath when she was almost 4 months but i was so scare I dry her very quickly. |
I have bathed her and I quickly blow dry her completely, You never know what is right! |
Kim,if you read my last post I said that if breeders here were having problems with letting their pups go at 7 weeks, they would have stopped doing it a long time ago. There have been no complaints so obviosly they carry on doing it.I dont know why getting them rid of them early is cheaper..by the time the pups leave at 7 weeks old they have had reglular check ups,2 sets of shots and their chip inplanted,so already the breeder has spent over 100€ (over $100) on these pups. They come with health garantees, pedigree papers,a bag of kibble and some vitamins so its not as if they are throwing them out and piling in the money..yorkies here are very cheap so they dont make breeders rich and Im still in touch with the breeders of Lady and Jess, they love seeing them in pictures and hearing news about them. Each country works differently and if what they are doing works for everybody and the pups are healthy and happy then why is it wrong?;) |
I just got mine he is almost 9 weeks old and I use those wipes too because it is kinda cold out to be giving him a bath. |
