Patella operations?(bad knee lose knee cap)
 

The vet recommends Zoey have a knee operation (lose patella cost$1400)
how many of you have had your dogs go thru this process?
How many didn't get this operation but was recommended and dogs still okay.

Our problem is we got two dogs from the same litter if each knee has to be done thats $5600.Also what stopping the knee to go bad again after this operation.

I don't have any experience in this matter, but have been told by breeders about their dogs who've had problems like these.

I was told that if the knee cap is not causing any pain or discomfort to the dog, it really isn't worth getting the operation done. When I say worth, I don't mean the money spent, but the fact that there might be complications. Also, since yorkies are typically smaller dogs, a loose knee cap to them may not be as severe as a loose knee cap to a bigger dog. I'm not sure how true this is though.

hi, im so sorry to hear about your babies' knees. i wanted to suggest chiropractic to you. chiropractors that are qualified can adjust their knees and spines and help the injuries to heal in properly without surgery. ill be happy to answer and refer a doctor in your area if you are interested.

My 1 1/2 year old had the surgery. I was desperate for info during the time leading up to the surgery, so if you have any questions I'll be happy to tell you of our experience.

The basics were that his left leg was as bad as it gets so we had to have it done right away. His right leg is in between a 2-3 so we are watching it for now. He went in for surgery and had to stay overnight, though I did go visit him the day of his surgery. He was pretty drunk at the time of the visit so it wasn't very pretty, but probably harder on me than him. I left him a blanket with my scent on it and we picked him up the next morning. That second day we gave him pain meds so he mostly slept. After that he was back to his usual self and seemed to do just fine. We didn't even give him any more pain meds. He had a soft cast for about 10 days until the stitches came out. My husband built him a ramp so he could get up and down off of our bed because you CANNOT stop him from jumping. He was up and down off of the couch within a couple of days whether we liked it or not.

This was in May and he is doing great now. Like I said, for now we are just watching the other leg.

Are they having any problems from it? Favoring or lifing the leg? How old are they? I would not recommend rushing into surgery if they aren't showing any signs whatsoever. Some are born with it and it never causes a problem. If they have no symptoms, just watch what they jump from. I know they are crazy little buggers sometimes, but I wouldn't let them on anything higher than the couch...ever. Not beds or jumping from cars or anything. Honestly, don't panic just yet. In addition, if they were diagnosed at 6 weeks then that is too early to be checked. They aren't done growing yet.
