Gizmo is 4 yrs and has not been neutered. We don't have a problem with marking. |
My dog started marking at 4mos...outside and he did lift at someone's house. I got him neutered at 6 1/2 mos because I was getting another male dog and didn't want a Peeing war...and I noticed on here that there seemed to be a window where if you got them done at that 6-7 mos mark, most problems disappeared or didn't appear whereas after the 7mos it seemed to be harder (from what I read). I think my dog has been better about the bathroom training in other people's houses since being fixed but outside...he marks constantly...and I mean constantly...like he has never been fixed. I have to wonder if it depends on the dog. Maybe if I hadn't of neutered my dog he would have gotten worse whereas some dogs may be controllable or not worse? The few dogs I've met who are not neutered and are not with a breeder did not want to "play". All they had on their mind was humping and I felt bad for them and the dogs who were trying to play with them. they had no interest in social interaction and play...just..."come here so I can..." you know. However, I have met people on here and in person who have told me they had un-neutered dogs and do not have that problem. They told me this anyways....but I haven't actually seen the dogs. I think you can train a dog not to behave that way... The last playdate we had was with a 9 year old dacsand (sp?). He is not neutered. His fellow housemates (another dacsaund (sp?) and a shepard) are because my friend had peeing wars in the house and couldn't take it between the two of them. The un-neutered dacsaund (sp?) doesn't mark...but he only had one thing on the mind when playing with my male neutered dog. I noticed the same thing happening at a local dog park between neutered and un-neutered. The neutered dogs seem to be having more fun and were playing...but it could also come back to responsible owners and how the owners were training these dogs. I have mixed feelings and feel guilty about neutering my dog and at such an early age. I read the research and agree with the above posts saying about taking out our uterus and breasts because we "might" get cancer. It's probably healthier to have all your parts. I've also read about bone structure and so forth. It is all what you can handle behaviorally...and I don't live alone and we visit a lot...I couldn't take the chance...and I was worried about waiting too long and having problems start and not being able to fix them. But I always wonder...did I do the right thing? I guess this is a senseless post because I am in agreement with both sides of the argument. Ha! Susie |
