help traing 4 month old Hi, Iam having trouble getting my 4 month old Yorkie potty trained. Any suggestions. I attend recently the Yorkie specialty in PA. iT WAS VERY INTERESTING EXPERIENCE. Learned alot about grooming also. They had some neat vendors there. One sold awesome Yorkie items. It was called pocketpup.com Please send suggestions for training my yorkie. Am I rushing things. Welcome!!! Each one trains differently. I have had ones trained at 4 months, well actually only Cali and she is wee wee pad trained. All of my other were trained outside and were not completely trained until they were 8 months old. It helped with Cali that I am home full time. All of my other dogs were when I worked full time. Just pe persistent and watchful and he/ she will get the hang of it. Love to see pics of your baby! |
I'm at home full time so mine seemed to train easy, but what I did is just take them for a short walk around the yard once an hour and tell them they were good dogs when they pottied out side. If I would happen to catch them "going" inside I would stop them right away and take them out right away. If you are using piddle pads what you can do is take the paper towel that you used to clean up the piddle with and put them on the piddle pad to help it start to smell like the right spot. If your dog seems to keep going in the same spot I would just stick a pad over that spot and see if he will go on it then. If he does I would leave one there for a couple of days and then slowly start moving it where you want it a little bit at a time. the easiest way for us to get our male to go out side was to let Roxi out first and then place him near where she went and he would mark where she had went. I work 8-12 and leave Howie in his crate, come home for lunch and let Howie potty on his potty pad in the kitchen and have some lunch, then put him in his x-pen in the living room with water and toys and a puppy pad that he never needs to use, until I get home around 5:15-5:30. When I am home I've created "puppy pad country" which is the area that Howie seemed to like to pee on the carpet. I just put down 5 puppy pads and every time he walks over and goes potty he gets a treat immediately after. And I make sure that I reserve his favorite treat for potty rewards. Eventually I want to reduce "puppy pad country" down to just one pad. My point of that long winded explanation is that this is a little outside of the potty training norm, but it's the only thing that has worked for our situation. Good luck and be patient! |
