Spaying my yorkie Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been on here for awhile. Its time for Pia to get spayed and I'm very very nervous. Does anyone have any tips I should know? I'm really concerned about her being put under for the surgery. The surgery is scheduled for this Monday :( Your help is very appreciated. She's so little and it makes me even more concerend (just around 2 lbs) Thanks again for the help. :animal36 |
Unless you are the one doing the spaying there is nothing you can do. She'll be fine, don't worry. |

Just make sure your vet uses the safe anethesia and make sure they do pre surgery blood work. Other than that all we can do is wait and of course worry. But she will be fine, I honestly think it is harder on us!!! I will say a prayer for Pia's safe surgery and quick return to you. Let us know when she's out of surgery. |
Like Patti said pay the extra for the preop blood work to show if there is any problems with her liver or elsewhere that may predispose her to problems with the anesthesia. Make sure they use sevoflurane or isoflurane and never give a barbituate preinjection. I am sure she will be fine. You might want to invest in a baby onsie so she doesn't lick the incision and infect it after surgery or aloe vera has a bitter taste, but is safe to ingest. |
we just went through it last week. it was hard seeing her so 'helpless' and tired for the first few days. Heartbreaking actually. She tried to get up the first night when I came home from work but was so wobbly. Think of a newborn girraffe :) but keep her from doing this if possible. As everyone suggested to me, get a preemie onesie instead of a buster collar, works wonders although your baby is 1/2 the wt of mine. Instead of walking her outside to do her biz, I carried her to a nearby pad. She could barely keep herself up for long the first few days. Keep an eye out for pain indications (ours wined very slightly) or trembling. One day 1, she peed standing up, prob. cause she couldn't squat. poor thing! Buy pain meds!!! they'll need it. we fed her the soft canned food Innova since it's all ground up and baby food, read the ingredients. then day 3, we wet all her dry kibble really well. Have a syringe ready to syringe water in their mouth since they can't get up. She will be up and about in no time! Good luck with everything! |
