First Night Home??? I was wondering how everyone here handled their first night with their new pup? I pick mine up tomorrow around noon. She is already 15 weeks old. What is the best sleeping situation for the first night? I have a small crate for her as well as an ex pen and doggie bed.:confused: |
I would put the crate opened in the pen area with a pee pad. They can't make it all night without going potty. I would place the pen next to your bed. This is the best situation until they are older. I also recommend a Dex heartbeat Teddy bear and a heating pad on low under a blanket. Be prepared that the pup might cry. I am really bad about giving in and putting them right into bed with me, but the more freedom you allow them before they are potty trained the harder and longer the process. |
Ladys first night home she slept in her crate next to my side of the bed, with my hand dangled down into her crate so she knew I was there..I was waking up every few hours to take her to her wee wee pad...I remained doing this until I felt she was comfortable enough in our home...then kept her gated in the kitchen with her crate open... |

With both of mine I had them just outside of my bedroom in their crates. I wanted them to get used to their crates being in the same place. I set my alarm (not that you'll need it for the first couple of nights) to get up every 2 hours to let them out. After a week I lengthened it to every 3 hours and so on. Everntually I was only getting up once a night and after about 6 weeks I wasn't getting up at all. I got one of mine at 10 weeks and the other (my Boston Terrier) at 6 weeks. Tank, my yorkie, lasted a little longer without a potty break than Buckeye because he was older when he came home. The first night Buckeye cried a lonely cry. The second night it was a mad cry. He has been out with us all day and did not want to be in his crate. After that I started playing hard with him about 30 minutes bfore bed time and then took him out right before he went into his crate. That helped alot. Potty pads didn't work for us so that's why I decided to go this route. Good luck! And as excited as you're going to be, try to get a good night's sleep tonight...it'll be your last for a while.;) But it's all worth it in the end.:) |
you got that right about the last night sleep, i havent slept in 17 months till this day...no lie here either..good luck with your new puppy, its gonna be real fun.... |

At 15 weeks - my puppy was still sleeping a lot. He'd played his little heart out - ate - went to the bathroom and then slept like a baby. The first week I had my puppy - I let him sleep as much as he wanted - and really tried not to bother him too much -- he got up to play a lot. My pup has slept with me since the first night I got him. (And because he slept with me - he never cried at night....... just slept like a baby) My other dog sleeps with me also. My Yorkie will snuggle up with me and then move to the foot of the bed. My Bichon always sleeps at the foot of the bed - or off to the side. I think with his furry thick coat - he just gets too warm being close to a person. As you guessed - I'm single - so there's plenty of room in my bed for me and two little dogs...... Good Luck! |
Mine sleeps with me too. It keeps him quiet!! And your pup sounds big enough to sleep with you IF you're comfortable doing that. BUT I would definetly recommend getting some doggy diapers in case she decides to go potty in the middle of the night all over your bed!! |
