Puppy Afraid of Other Dogs My girl is 5 months old and is afraid (usually) of other dogs. If she can sense they are old, it seems she is fine, otherwise she won't be outgoing and play, except once with another puppy. If she is with the dog for a long period of time she'll loosen up, but still it's tough. Whenever she plays we give her lots of praise. Are some Yorkies just nervous around bigger dogs? |
She may have had a bad experience with a larger dog. I would suggest getting her into puppy training classes so she has a chance to socialize with other dogs. It's very important that she get over her fears, or they will turn into agression as she gets older. So the sooner you get her exposed to other dogs the better she will be. I take mine to classes through our local kennel club, but many shelters and Petco and/or Petsmart offer them too. |
Try taking your puppy around a big dog that you know is gentle and kind. That way your puppy will have good experiences with bigger dogs and may become less afraid. It is really important to socialize your puppy.....the training course is a great idea on where to start. Good luck. |
This isn't just a "Yorkie problem." With any breed, there are always a few dogs that are especially fearful around other dogs. And - "No" -- they haven't necessarily had a bad experience. They are just shy and fearful around other dogs. It just seems to be their nature. My little Yorkie is just the opposite to a fault. He has absolutely no fear around other dogs. He is very submissive though. He will run as fast as his little legs will carry him to get to the other dog and then flop over on his back (in a very submissive posture) and be ooooooh so friendly. Of course - the best thing to do is have them around other dogs that are playful and friendly who provide good, playful, happy, friendly experiences. But, this isn't always easy to arrange. I would just be selective regarding any other dogs your pup is around for a while. And - try to make his experience with other dogs as fun as possible for him. Carol Jean |
We take her to the park almost every day where the same few dogs are and she does fine with them. She hasn't had any real bad experiences, but just gets real low to the ground whenever a dog comes up to her (if she doesn't know it). I guess just keep taking her and she'll learn dogs are friendly. |
QUOTE: She hasn't had any real bad experiences, but just gets real low to the ground whenever a dog comes up to her (if she doesn't know it). ----------------------------------------------------------------- This isn't fear - My little Yorkie is afraid of nothing. He will run up to any dog as fast as he can get there -- but, the minute he gets there, he flops over on his back - kissing, licking, and his feet a flying. He'll even continue to do this with a dog that he has played with a dozen times. It's just his way of saying, - "Hi! I'm here - I'm friendly - don't bite me...." kiss kiss kiss!!!!! My dog is just submissive around other dogs - and so is yours. No problem here. In fact, with our little Yorkies, I think this is a good trait. Too often these little dogs act like they can conquer the world - and you know they can't. And, unfortunately, they often get themselves in trouble with other dogs trying to act tough, barking, etc. Your dog sounds sweet...... Carol Jean |
My Chanel fears other dogs, as soon as she sees them trot toward us, she wants to be carried, she hides her face and wants nothing to do with them. At home she is fine with my lab and her sister Chelsey, she bosses them around. Chanel will never go to strangers either, she's a very shy girl. Chelsey is the total opisite of Chanel, she will run up to any dog big or small and wants to play, she kisses them and is always submissive and friendly, she is the same with strangers, she always wants to greet everyone she sees which scares me a bit, because she could be easly snatched up. |
My Jewels gets nervous around other dogs. The other day I walked her and there was this small dog smaller than her and she wasnt nervous she sniffed him. So size must be an issue. |
My pup isn't afraid of other dogs at all - he is excited to run up and greet any dog - but he is very submissive and flops over on his back. I posted this earlier and have been thinking that it probably is good if these little guys do have respect and perhaps "even a little fear" of strange, larger dogs. This may save their life one day - or keep them from being injured. ***** Especially - some of the very tiny little dogs that some of you have. Being a little fearful - may mean they're a little "smarter." **I had a little mixed breed that constantly bothered and nipped the hind legs of a gentle older golden lab that used to come around and visit a lot. And you guessed it, , one day he finally had enough (I'm sure her nipping hurt him) --so he turned around and nipped her. It didn't really hurt her - but she kept a little more distance after that. Live and learn! Right! Carol Jean |
