Hello everyone, I just got a yorkie puppy and it is my first puppy ever...He is 9 wks tomorrow....I am new to all these so if you have suggestions or advice please tell me. I have a few questions for all you guys..First my puppy is really itchy..I took him to the vet and they put flea medicine on him and I noticed that his skin is really try and dandruffy is that normal?? Is there something like lotion that I can get to put on his skin?? Also his nails are starting to get a little long, is there a certain age that I should wait until I can trim them or file them down?? Last questions his moms ears were up and his dads ears were down..his are down right now but I was wondering if theres something I can do to make them go up or if they will go up with time....Please help!!! :confused:

Wow! You don't ask much, do you?:D Just kidding! Welcome to yorkietalk. You can try oatmeal shampoo. It's moisturizing. Also, be sure to rinse all of the shampoo out very well. Do you have doggie nail clippers? If he'll let you trim them, yes, go ahead and do it, but I would caution you that you need to look to see where the quick is underneath them and not cut into that. You will hurt him and he'll bleed. You need styptic powder in case you do. Beware that cutting into the quick can make him shy away from you cutting them in the future. It might be best for you to drop by a groomers and ask them to show you the first time. You can shave his ears to help them go up. Unless you have a mustache trimmer or similar trimmer, I wouldn't try it the first time by myself unless he is very agreeable. A groomer would be glad to do it for you.

Hi! and welcome. Sorry that your puppy is going through the skin problem. I would try emu oil or tea tree oil to see if it help with the skin. If that doesn't work than you might have to request medicated shampoo from your vet probably Virback. As for the the nails I think the sooner the better but you might have to introduce him over a course of days to whatever it is you are going to use to trim them.:thumbup:

For the skin I use this shampoo and it relieves them and soothes and moisturizes the skin and coat. It also has fatty acids in it that also well help nourish the skin and coat. It is soap free so it is gentle to use, it has a bit of an oatmeal smell to it and with this shampoo you can use it as often as you want because it will never dry out the skin. If this doesn't work then you will need to get a medicated shampoo for him.
Another thing you might want to consider is his diet. A poor diet can lead to dry and flaky skin. If you put him on a high quality food his skin and coat will be healthier and can clear it up. You can also give him either brewers yeast tablets for dogs or Missing Link for dogs and they will clear up his skin and coat problem and he will have a beautiful coat and healthy skin. Both products are relatively inexpensive and will last you for awhile. The missing link especially is great, lots of people here use it, it is a great product!! Here is a link for it...

As for the nails it is always best to start trimming them right away and get them use to it. If you don't know how to cut the nails, ask your vet or groomer to show you. It is really easy but if you cut the quick the first time he will be fearful of it and you will have a harder time cutting his nails next time. So make sure the first time is a pleasant and not frightening experience.

As for the ears you can shave the tips, massage them and even tape them if you want.

Congratulations on your new puppy. He is very young, but those nails can be clipped. There are sites on the internet that illustrate how to cut them, or you can go to Petsmart or the vet as suggested and they can show you. Better you learn to do this yourself. I've never taken mine to a groomer except for the nails, but now do it myself. It is a struggle but worth it to me.

You should get a set of clippers or even a mustache trimmer. Shave the hair off both sides of the ears and cut around the outline of the ear. Many times when this heavy hair is removed, the ears pop right up. This is something you can do yourself. I can't tell you how many people show pictures of their dogs back from the groomer and the ears aren't done properly. Hair is also supposed to be plucked from the ear canal. You should have seen how much came out of Debbie's ears the first time I had it done. It never grew back that much since. Once the ears are up only the top third are supposed to be trimmed and shaved. The ears might also fall down again during teething too.

Rinsing is the most important part of the bath. I take a shower with Debbie. This is easy for me and not messy. Dogs always shake the water off and this way she is thoroughly rinsed. Don't use baby shampoo. Even though it is tear free, it isn't formulated for a puppy's coat especially one who is flakey. If one of those suggested shampoos don't do the trick, maybe the vet can help. Brush your puppy everyday. He needs to get used to daily grooming. It will keep his skin and hair healthy and looking good.

about the itchyness, my first thought, was, what food is he on? Some dogs can be allergic to the corn or certain foods in the ingredients in there food, you want to have him on a good diet, pay close attention to the ingredients, you may want to do a search in the "health and diet" section here at YT, to find out what brands are the best, I use Nutro Ultra.
Also, Apple Cider Vinigar is great for dry itchy skin, and it really makes there coat soft. When I use it, I get a spray bottle and put 1 part Apple Cider Vinigar, and 3 parts water. It dont smell all the greatest, but you can use a leave in conditioner after you spray that on your puppy.

You can start now by having his nails clipped, better to get him used to it asap!

If his ears dont go up on there own, then you can tape them up, just do your research on how to tape the ears.

My Molliemae use to itch and have dry skin. When I changed to a food with no corn or by-products in it she stopped itching. I truly believe the food they eat has a lot to do with it. I feed her Nutro Max. You can get it at Petsmart. At first I tried Science Diet which didn't stop the itching. Matter of fact I tried others also. Nutro works for me. I feed her the lamb and rice.

FIrst I want to thank you guys for all your help...I did put a picture on my profile but I have figured out how to put it where you guys all have yours...Ok about my little Gizmo..I had him on Purina Pro Plan but as soon as I found out he might be allergic to corn I went to a pet health store I guess you can say where they have all foods that contain no corn, wheat and all those ingredients and they recommended Solid Gold puppy food...
Another thing when i went to the vet he told me to use baby shampoo and thanks to your help I will be taking him off of that let me know which shampoos you guys used when ur babies were young....Right now that he is so young can you guys recommend how often to take him a bath??? Let me know what you think of the Solid Gold puppy food also I heard Canidae food is also good.. What do u think??:) :) THank you guys again.....!!! U are wonderful

I like to use NOVA PEARLS for dry flakey skin. It is kind of hard to find but does the trick well. Congrats on your new baby!!

Is it bad to let the pups sleep in the bed with you??
 

I have him in a crib so that he has space to move...but he jumps up and tries to get out and cries until i do...Then I put him on top of a pillow and he goes straight to sleep until he has to go to the bathroom....Any suggestions?? Do any of you let them sleep with you??
