Ears not up at 5 months.. Any hope? Since we first got Brooklyn, his ears have gone from being up to being day several times. For the last 10 or so days, they have been down. I tried to trim them (with some success), but I am not sure if I removed enough. Any suggestions on what to do? Doing the whole taping thing seems overly complicated but I guess I could figure it out if I really needed to as a last resort. |
My yorkie's ears went down during his teething period which i think is around the age of your yorkie. After he was all done teething his ears went up on their own. Allthough i have heard of people needing to tape, ive never tried. |
My girl ears were fine when I first taped them for about two weeks at the age of 9 weeks. Then she started teething at 6 months and one day one went down and a few days later the second follow. I was worried cause I didn't wan't floppy ears so I re-taped and shaved and nothing they wouldn't go back up. I thought well I will just have to love her with floppy ears the same . Well it was cause she was teething and after that they perked up again and they've been up ever since. So with your pup you still have hope. :animal36 |
Teething occurs between 4 and 6 months approx. and the ears can flop. If they were standing before, they will stand again. Massage a couple of times during the day and trim any excess hair off of the ears that might be weighing them down. My vet says taping is an old wives tale and also advises against calcium supplementation, but I know many breeders who swear by the taping. My thinking is that the ears would have stood anyway, with or without the tape. |
I think it's probably teething too, and they'll stand up again! You'll probably see one up and one down at times...I think that's so cute. I also think if they're a bit under the weather, their ears can flop. Maddie had one ear flopped down when she was sick with tonsillitis and that was just recently and she's nearly 2 years old. Once she was feeling better, they stood back up! |
It was right around that time (5 months), that both of Joey's ears stood up. I didn't bother with taping. Chances are good that the same will happen with Brooklyn. |
When we got our little Izzie she had floppy ears and i LOVED them. They stood up quite quickly and although we love her and her ears i would have been delighted had they remained floppy. Until i read this site i didn't even know that people could do things to make their ears stand up. I hope it doesn't hurt them? |
Good to hear that other people have had similar experiences and that they eventually went up. I think I will take him to the grommers and have them better trimmed and just give them time. Thanks guys. :D |
Ha! The idea of taping a puppy's ears makes me laugh.. I can just imagine me sitting on the couch with Howie and a roll of tape trying to convince him to stay still. He would be squirming and trying to eat the tape, it would get stuck in his fur, he would run away from me with the roll of tape still stuck to his fur and unraveling as he ran and me chasing after him with a bag of treats. I'll live with the one floppy ear he has, thank you very much. LOL Just a quick question for those who had ears go down during teething - around what age did they go back up? |
