help!! is this normal? my lexy got spayed today. i picked her up at 5 yesterday, and it's 10 in the morning right now. she's still lethargic, sleeping a lot, not moving, confused, and generally seems depressed. is this normal??? should i be worried? could too much anesthesia cause damage? i'm sooo worried about her. she was only 3 lbs when they gave her the surgery. i don't know if it was too traumatic for her little body, or if i'm overreacting! |
You might call your Vet and talk to him about it. Mine were back to normal by the next day |
My little guy was very lethargic ..... the day after his neuter surgery. I couldn't get him to eat or drink anything and I think that was making him weak. He just wanted to sleep. I finally forced some sugar water down him the next afternoon and then by evening he finally ate a little bit and started to perk up a little. He wasn't really very energetic until the 2nd day after. My first yorkie seemed back to normal by the day after his surgery and both yorkies had the same vet. I just think the recuperation time is different with each one. Has your little girl ate or drank anything yet? Never hurts to talk to the vet if you are worried. |
Lucy was fixed when she was only 2 pounds. She was slow the next day but not confused. I think the other post is right, call the vet and talk to them. |
It took mine a day or two to get back to normal, but if you are concerned you should definately call the vet , If nothing else it will give you peace of mind. Good luck and give your baby big hugs and kisses for us. :getwellso  :love-hug3 :big_hug: :ittysm: |
You definitely are NOT overreacting! My chihuahua weighs 3 1/2 pounds and it seemed to take her at least a good week to recover. I actually had to take her back to the vet for fluids because she refused to eat or drink or even walk. I was so worried about her that I posted on here for advice. My vet said the tinier they are the more they hurt because there just isn't any room inside of her, compared to a bigger dog, for the surgeon to be able to work. Call your vet because you'll feel better after talking to them or after they see her if you bring her in to be checked. hugs to you and Lexie! :big_hug: :getwell: |
I would check with the vet also. Cali was spayed during her 1st heat and had other biopsies etc. done and I picker her up 36 hours after surgery and she was very lethargic and not wanting to eat much but after a couple of days she was acting more normal. Every dog handles it differently but double checking with the vet is a good idea. I hope she feels better soon. |
Definitely call the vet. Let us know how she is doing. Good luck! |
I also would check with the vet. Misha was kinda out of it for a few days. It took her a week before she wanted to play a little. After 2 weeks the stitches came out & she was back to her old self. |
I would certainly give her a day or two....after all -- she did have surgery with an anesthetic.... and I'm sure some dogs just want to sleep and rest longer than others after this. Size - really shouldn't have anything to do with this surgery. At the Univ of WA, they spay much smaller animals all the time (mice, etc.) with no real problems. I work in Cardiology - stop and think about the complicated hours-long heart surgerys that are done on newborns (their hearts are the size of a walnut) -- and most of them do very well. Let your puppy rest - My neutered boy came home and slept the day away -- and I think he did sleep a little more than usual the next day, but he was just fine. Carol Jean |
she's pretty much back to normal! thanks everyone for your concern. i can always count on the yt-ers to reassure me! she's doing MUCH better, and this morning i got up, took her out, brought her in, and she was back to chasing the cat and re-killing her rubber chicken (which is kind of a ritual for her every day). i guess it does take a while for some dogs! my boyfriend's dog who is a beagle mix was up and running within the hour, i guess i shouldn't have used him as a measuring stick for how my lexy would react to surgery! thanks again! |
Glad to hear Lexy is feeling better...Lady took a few days to get back to normal too... |
Great to hear that Lexi is doing well.....Although the rubber chicken might have wanted another day of recouping...lol |
