Questions on breeding.
 

I have been trying to get some preliminary answers on breeding yorkies but can only finds information on Females.

I have a cute male yorkie he is 6 months and around 4.5lbs. My sister has a 2 year old 4lb maltese and she wants to breed them. She just wants one litter and then she plans on getting her fixed.

I was planning on having my baby neutered in 2 weeks.
Is he of age to be mated?
Will his attitude change?
If I fix him after he is mated once, will that affect his attitude?

I want to get an idea before I say yes.

I heard that even if they breed only once males can then start marking in the house and it may not cease once you have them neutered. To me thats just not worth it for a one time breeding. I really wanted t breed my two but I didnt want a male that marked in the house so I had them spayed and neutered

he us far too young to be mated. Wouldn't even have any sperm yet. he needs to be at least a year old. My ceeby did not change in anyway after mating him. he hasn't gotten any worse marking either!!!!!!! he has always been bad about that and that is why he is now in a belly band several hours a day.

I think your best chances of curbing any male marking would be to have him fixed and not mate him. Is she in heat now, if not, delaying the procedure increases the odds that he will still mark (the older, the greater the chance). Does your sister know that a 4 pounder may have to have an expensive C-section and all the normal costs involved with a litter, not even mentioning the risk of losing the mom in the process.

A male is most likely fertile at 6 months, if he can figure out what to do. Hope your sister won't be mad, but I would decline and let her find another stud dog.

I'm not a breeder so definitely not an expert here. But, I was under the impression that the male should be smaller than the female.....

Why are you going to add to the long list of mixed breeds out there? Hopefully Im just reading this wrong and you are considering breeding him with another yorkie, even then I would think hard about doing it.
Go to petfinder.com and check out how many yorkie and maltese mixes are there for adoption. Do you really want to create more mixed breed dogs?
Yeah I know the new trend is mixing dogs and "creating" designer dogs but in reality that dog is just a mutt.
Please reconsider doing this. Dogs do not need to have one litter before being fixed as many people assume they do.

Yes, he is too young to be bred. At 6 months, he still wil not have developed into the adult dog that you will need to evaluate for stud use. Also, it is ideal for the female to be smaller than the male. Yes, possibly it will change his attitude and an post-mating neuter will not neccessarily correct his behavior as you may hope it would. (Our stud would often go though times of not eating, whining, marking and depression just being around someone who owned an in-heat female.)

Plus, I don't know what the goal of you or your sister is, but generally, wanting to "breed a female just one time and then have her fixed" is not exactly the best reason.:)

I am still rather confused as to whether he is of consenting age yet. Two people said he isn't and one person said he is. As far as I can tell he is willing to go at it with anything. LOL.

We probably won't go along with it as I really want him neutered and he is not a marker now and I don't want him to become one.

I told my sister of the risk associated with her little girl and she certainly does not want to put her in harms way, so it looks like we won't do it.

As for the comments on why we wanted to breed. It's simple. We both love our dogs and want to see what wonderful puppies they could spawn. Just the same way you meet someone and you have children you wonder what they would look like.

I am sorry but some of the best dogs out there are mutts we were not doing it to make a profit and sell designer dogs. From all the mixed yorkie/maltese dogs I have seen they are cute. Why can't we have cute Morkies, why is that so wrong!

If they had bad genetics for each of there breeds I could understand not mating them but aside from two healthy dogs that could make cute puppies I don't see anything wrong with that unless you are trying to market them as designer dogs, and that was not our intention.

There is a difference between a dog that is of good health and a dog that is of good genetics, as you put it. Do either you or your sister now how to distinguish between the two? (Like, what breed-specific conditions have both dogs been tested for?, etc.) Likewise, there is a difference between a young male who is willing and physically able to breed and one who is of the age that he should be used as a stud.
No one is trying to talk you out of it necessarily, just trying to inform you of what an in depth process it is. There is alot more to it than, "well, I bet they would make some cute puppies."

Well, I have to be honest. I would try to talk you out of it strictly out of an animal welfare interest.

Even if you were breeding 2 Yorkies or 2 Maltese, I would still say that we should neuter/spay our pets. There are just too many homeless, abandoned & shelter dogs out there to bring more innocent pups into this world. Until we can or will take care of the ones already here, I don't feel like we have the right to deprive them of future homes by bringing more pets into the world.

I am not speaking to those that have two outstanding examples of the breed but to the other 99% of us that have sweet, darling wonderful pets.

No need to talk me out of it. It was just something that we were considering.

I am going to pass and get my puppy neutered. I do not want to wait any longer to get him neutered. I also don't want to risk him starting to mark as he does not do it now.

His health is the only thing that is important to me.
