How much can they walk? I was just reading the thread about hyper yorkies...and the remedy seems to be a good walk. I know this questions depends on their size....but how much can a yorkie walk? I'll get my boy the first week of October. I walk allot...sometimes fast paced. What can I expect him to do at first? He's 2 lbs and 3 oz this weekend - he'll be 12 weeks when I bring him home. This may be a stupid question....how do you know when they've done enough? New mommy questions...have patience with me:D JaTA (Jasper Tate's Mom to be) |
romeo is 3yrs old and outwalks me. we walk at least 2miles a day. (weather permitting) he is long legged which i hear makes a difference. when he was younger he would sit down when he was tired. they let you know if they have had enough. bring water because they dehydrate easily. foaming and heavy panting is a warning sign. romeo is hyper and walking helps keep him calm when he's at home. plus the excercise is good for me too. |
Hi JaTa:) That would depend on the individual puppy. Some don't take to the leash very well, and need a little time to get used to it. Others want to run and jump, and basically go off in all directions. It'll probably take a little time for him to 'walk' properly. They usually let you know when they've had enough. They'll either refuse to walk and look up at you to be picked up, or lie down. My advice would be to start slow and gradually increase the length of the walks. :aimeeyork |

Make sure your pup doesn't go near any other animal poop... he can get very sick from it. At 12 weels they don't have all their shots, be careful where you walk him and keep your eye on what he comes in contact with... |
It really depends on the temperature and the surface you are walking on. After your yorkie has had all of his shots, take him out and see what he can do. It really takes them awhile to get to an age where they are even interested in anything outside their own little world, but once they do become interested, watch out! Actually, most want to take it slow and sniff and investigate - everything in the world is new to them - they are learning. In hot weather, be very careful of the surface they are walking on. Don't want to burn their foot pads. You want to remember that they can overheat before you realize they are that hot. So, do be careful. In the winter, be careful not to keep them out too long. |

Like everyone else said, it depends on the dog. Two 30-45 minute walk is what is recommended, but I've noticed the longer I walk her the more calm she is. There was another post that someone said they went for 10 miles with their yorkie. Rosie probably would not mind a 10 mile walk, but I don't know if I'm up for a 10 mile walk:) |
Posts more Good info YT'ers. This is the Very Best place to get yorkie info! Thanks for the reminder for water...I would have left w/o it. And the staying away from other poo....what about my own outside dog poo? Of course I don't want him messing with any poo...but do I need to be really careful with my own outside dog poo? Keep the posts coming - ya'll are full of great information. I've been reading that book about Yorkies and it says that Yorkies are born natural runners, with the right training they can run 6-9 miles at a time... Wow, that's more than I can. But it depends on the size too, I guess. A 6-7 lbs dog can doesn't get tired as esily as a 3 or 4 lbs one... |
Sean loves to take walks but not when it's hot out. Now that the weather has cooled down, he will pull on his leash to take a long walk. I always take water with me, no matter what the temperature, since he does get thirsty. I also take some tissues and "doggy bags" to pick up after him. If he tires or doesn't feel like walking more, he'll stop and look up at me as if to say "OK, Mom, I've had enough. Pick me up." I'm considering getting a doggy stroller. |
With a new puppy I would ask your vet when you can start taking walks. My vet wouldnt let us untill they had their 3rd set of shots. Chachi is 19 months and will walk as long as I do. Little ones will probably need picked up after a eriod of time |
Lizzy has been walking about 4 miles aday since she was about 6 months and probably could walk further...(she just turned 1 this weekendand is 4.2lbs) But I always bring water with us. Now Zoe who is almost 4 years old has a hard time with 2 miles...so its an individual thing....My 2 will stop and ask to be picked up if they are tired. Congrats on the new pup!!! |
