Can they double in weight after 6 months? I saw a 1 1/2 pound 6 month old yorkie puppy, it's parents are 4 lbs and 3 1/2pounds(it'snot the one that's $8,500, I'm not that crazy). My question is, is it possible for it to get larger than 2 1/2 pounds? The owners said that their puppies always end up smaller than 3 pounds. How could the puppies continually be smaller than the parents? I thought I read that someone had a puppy that small at that age and that it actually ended up being 4 pounds when grown. Please don't flame me, or lecture me. I don't need another puppy or dog but if you could see how cute this little girl is.... The price is fair enough but I'm seriously trying to talk myself out of it. She's perfectly healthy. |
I think the chances of his doubling his weight when hs already 6 months is very slim. He might hit 2 lbs |
I just had this conversation with my vet last week.. he said that yorkies are typically done their major growing by 6 months. A yorkie under 2 pounds... do you have any pictures? It seems so tiny. No judging! I'd be scared to death to take care of one. I guess it's a credit to the breeder that they kept it until at least 6 months. |
Height and length wise, they are through growing but may continue to gain a little weight. I don't forsee this pup being more than 3 pounds...but it also depends on what you feed it. It could get fat or if you spay/neuter the pup, it will gain some weight. |
I agree most dogs are almost finished growing by 6 months, though I did have one girl who grew til she was 18 months (thankfully or she wouldn't have ever been a mommy).. sounds like this is going to be ONE small kiddo. As for how a pup is smaller than both parents, well breeding dogs is not breeding GENOTYPE (aka what you see before you) it is breeding PHENOTYPE (aka every generation behind each parent contributes) not only for size, but for everything, coat color, texture, ear size, head type, bite, back length, height, etc. etc. etc. etc. also including HEALTH. WHen you say this pup is perfectly healthy, does the breeder have documentation of that? AKA a bile acid test for starters, documentation of no collapsing trachea, luxated patellas, heart defects, etc.? Quote:

I know someone who has a 2 lb 6 ounce yorkie. Her grandmother was TWELVE POUNDS. To the eye this little yorkie is perfectly healthy as well, unfortunately upon testing it is found that she has MVD..which explains a lot of her tiny size. She was only 2 lbs 2 oz until she was spayed, the extra 4 ounces is her being chubby.. and yes she is so tiny, I would NEVER want to be responsible for her! Quote:

Genotype/Phenotype? breeding dogs is not breeding GENOTYPE (aka what you see before you) it is breeding PHENOTYPE (aka every generation behind each parent Almost correct, except you have it backwards. Phenotype iis what you see physically, and genotype is the genetic makeup. |
LOL sheesh I didn't even catch that mistake, you are good thanks!:animal36 Quote:

We got Titan at 6 months and he was 2.5 lb and he still is right around that and he turns a year this month. He has always been healthy and has had no problems. He is actually going to be a daddy twice in the next month. Roxi should welp next week. |
