To Breed or Not to Breed...that is the ? Please give me the pro's:thumbup: and cons :thumbdown of breeding. I put this thread on the general forum b/c I'd like to hear everyone's views on this. DH and I are debating on if we'd like to breed Phoebe or not. I've read alot about it and still am not sure if I'm up for the work of it or not. The cost, finding a stud, putting her through it, etc. I was going to call today to schedule her spay appt. but for some reason I'm still debating. My mom bred Shih Tzu's when I was growing up, so I know it's A LOT of work. But I just wanted to get everyone's input on what I should do. Thanks in advance for your help :) |
My advice is follow your gut and be smart about it. Sounds like you are giving it serious thought, which is the first step in the right direction. It is costly and trying, but the benefits are great too, IMO. Are there any breeders in your area you could work with? A vet? Experience a whelp (or 2 or 3 or 4...;) )? I can't tell you how greatful I was for that!:) Good luck! |
I believe all our pets should be spayed & neutered. Very few are such remarkable examples of the breed that their genes need to be passed on for the good of the breed. Until we have all of the strays, sheltered homes every time we breed a litter of pets, we take those homes away from the ones that really need them. If anyone does feel like they have to breed, they should pay for the neutering of however many strays those newborn puppies could produce in a lifetime. :) I know I'm radical but there are so many sad sad stories of unwanted & abused pets. |
I think one of your first considerations should be your little girl. Is she a Yorkie that should be bred? If she is - your next decision is whether or not you want to breed her. This decision is like a lot of other decisions we make throughout our lives. It's an important one that requires a lot of commitment, follow through, and work. In all seriousness, a lot of people choose not to breed their little dogs - simply because there is no real good reason to do it, and they don't want to put their little dogs through the ordeal. It is a lot of work -- and sometimes a lot of heartbreak and unexpected expenses become a part of what people thought was going to be a fun and enjoyable experience. I think whether or not you breed your dog is going to end up being your own personal decision. For many reasons, I chose not to ever breed any of my dogs many years ago. And, I have had several good looking purebreds that could easily have been breed. Think long and hard - and if you do decide to breed your little Yorkie - become educated - be prepared - do your very best, and I wish you the best of luck. Carol Jean |
Have you asked yourself "why" you would want to breed her? I would never ever risk my girls lives, i would never ever in my life forgive myself if anything had to happen to them!! |

:bravo: :goodpost: WELL SAID!!! I will remember this next time a thought of (me) being a future breeder. |
If she is breed quality, and you enjoy it...sure! :) I think it's a wonderful experience. But there is a thread here about "black yorkie"...and (i know many people here will hate me for it), but i don''t think it's a good idea to breed those kind of dogs... |
I agree I would first ask myself why I wanted to. I seen people say they bred because they wanted their dog to have the experience. Dogs don't know the difference. Is it because you want to experience it? Is it because someone you know wants one of her pups? I'm sure you know you aren't going to make a fortune, so it can't be the money. If it's for a hobby then I would guess you would not want to breed her just once. That might be a tough question to answer. I plan to breed as a hobby, and hopefully I can at least make enough to cover my expenses. |

This was a different subject, about breeding. And my opinion is...don't breed those dogs. I have no problems with yorkies that don't much the standard, believe me. Maybe i even going to buy this kind of dog by my self...because personality is a main thing for me. I with this girl only good things with her baby, and i am sure she will enjoy her/him a lot, no mather if he is black. I just don't think it's right to breed them. I know many will not agree with me, and it's ok. But it was no personal attack at all. |

I am just looking for a chihuahua puppy now, so i see a lot of adds, and i just SO UNGRY ! People breed everything , just everything and than say "this is the most beautiful yorkie...chihuahua and such" And I just hate those lies so much. for example...they sell it as a purebred yorkie for 650$ http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/6...kkkkkkksr9.jpg sorry, but this is a joke... I feel bad for people that don't know the standard, pay that kind of money..and than everybody say to them on the street "it's not a yorkie." and they get upset. ofcourse it's a pet..and we will love a mix or not a course the same, but we should not pay that kind of money for those dogs to not honest breeders. |

You could go to the breeders section and find a lot of info and stories there...both with happy endings and sad endings. It will be a personal choice of yours if you are up to the risk and committment (and the joy and satisfaction is all goes perfectly). Talk to your Mom, see how she felt about it now that you can understand it from an adult's perspective. |

Thanks, i think yorkies much more cuter than chihuahuas by the way :) |
Drum Roll Please..... My husband and I went to dinner tonight and we talked about it for the LAST TIME :) We are going to get Phoebe fixed. I just read all of your comments and I appreciate everyone's feedback. I do agree with a lot of you. I have 2 female Boxers. One of which we adopted b/c someone probably felt she wasn't up to the STANDARD BOXER and it just made me sick. She is the most loveable dog there is. I don't care if she's smaller than the norm or her tail isn't docked right. I feel there are so many animals out there that do need homes and animal population of strays is just sad. Some people are uneducated with buying dogs that once they reach a certain age they don't want them anymore. I don't want to be possibly apart of that when there are so many animals out there already that need homes. I for sure would not have been in it for the money. But truthfully I do not want to see Phoebe go through that. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I just don't think it's the right thing for us. So we agreed...tomorrow I'm calling to make her appt. for 3wks. YIKES. Now I'll be stressed about that, ha. You'd think with 2 other dogs I'd be used to it...NOPE, it never gets easier to put them into surgery :) Thanks again for all your help. That's why I love this website! |

Well to be honest i would not ever ask this question here again i love YT and there is some great advice here but this is a topic that brings out the beast here and when i asked this question just to get knowledge i felt like i got bashed and also i felt that people were talking about me on other threads about it yes i know everyone has their opinion and i am the first to say take what you want from the thread and ignore the rest but this is a topic that gets out of hand here. I feel it's your dog and yes i do think people should adopt we have adopted 2 cats and a black lab but not everyone wants to adopt and even if you didn't breed your dog someone else would breed theirs yorkies are in demand and no i don't think you should breed to just breed but if you are serious about it and you come here looking for advice i think thats what you should get not the OMG you are so cruel to your dog speech. People really if someone is going to breed their dog they will regardless of what we say or don't say shouldn't we give advice to help them do it so that there isn't a problem later? I love YT and i think it is the most wonderful place to talk and learn about our yorkies but lately i am really getting tired of the bashing and hatefulness towards each other we need to ban together to help each other. I'm sorry i didn't want to write a letter here and please don't take me wrong you all know i love you here.:D |
Melania I think your doing the right thing by getting her fixed. You have to think of it this way, was she bought to be your pet and best friend? If your answer is yes, then risking her life to breed her would not be worth it. I know you love her and it would just devastate you if anything would happen to her. Let us know when the spaying appt is, you will be in my thoughts and prayers! |
