Yorkies-Calm? So I was reading on the net and I came across a statement someone made. It got me thinking is their something wrong with the statement or something wrong with my Lil Bumblebee? The statement was something about yorkies as a breed were calm, laid back companions. My Lil Bumblebee drives me crazy she is always jumping, running, barking and basicly a wild child all day long. How may people have a calm, laid back yorkie? How may have a wild child? |
I have 2 wild childs!!!! lol At times they will lay around and stay calm but most of the time they are chasing eachother around the house. Sometimes I feel like they are going to get hurt because they bang themselves pretty hard against my walls and furniture (I don't have carpet) but it doesn't seem to bother them. |
I have to vote for the wild-child one........My kitty and Holly are both wild childs! Kitty has been through obedience training and passed with flying collars but she still runs wild. She chases her balls and if you don't throw them for her she does it herself. lol |
Mine are a mixture of calm and wild child. They are calm normally but if someone comes up to the door they are willd child |
lol, I've never heard them described as calm or laid back - most describe them as energetic, even for their small size and books say if you're looking for a lap dog, look elsewhere. They're terriers! You're not alone, Oscar and Ruthie are both pretty nuts, luckily they have each other to take their craziness out on - they just come to me for naps and lovin! |
Mine is definitely a wild child. He is only 8 mths old though so I hope he will settle down as he ages. If I sit down anywhere he thinks its playtime and will bring me his toys and start barking to play. I also have 2 other dogs and he wears them out too. He can go all day long at full speed but when I put him on his little bed at night he immediately crashes and I think is almost relieved to rest. My first yorkie was content to sit by me for hours so I think it just depends on their personality. |
I bought a few yorkie books and they all say energetic, a big dog trapped in a small body etc........ |
2 wild ones both my male (20mo) and female (12mo) are mainly wild. Granted there are times when they are quite but mostly one is teasing the other to play.:animal36 :animal36 |
I don't think I have a wild-child. Well, at least not yet. Buttercup has been calm ever since I got him. But I don't think statements for a specific breed apply to every single one. Dogs are like humans. |
Lucy is calm. She is 14 months old. I wonder if it is because she lives with a very calm 11 year old lab. |
calm, laid back Lady??? yeah right....lol....maybe the first day I brought her home....she is always running and jumping, I have maybe seen her take a nap once in the last 5 months that we have had her...She knows when to listen but she always up to something....she hates sitting still |

The Yorkie is considered a companion breed of dog, but they are terriers first. So think of the personalities of most terriers, add coat, little and cute and you have a Yorkie --- once heck of a handful of little dog. |
I think Tatum is an exception to the rule. Everything I've read says that Yorkies are typically the opposite of calm but Tatum is such a laid back pooch. I think it has so much to do with their environment. Before Tatum, we had a toy poodle who was also very laid back and calm - not like poodles are "supposed to be". Of course Tatum has her wild moments when she plays out in the yard with her Aust. Shepherd sister but that doesn't last too long. |
All my 3 previous girls were laid back and never off my lap. Dennis as a pup was a menace, hence his name “Dennis the Menace". However, now that he is a year and a half, he has calmed considerable and since I got Sahara 3 weeks ago he is just a little gentleman! Sahara is much to new to read as she is still a babe and I only get to see her a nap time as she is always playing with the Dennis. I am a little jealous, especially since I never get to see her beautiful little face. |

Bree is very calm and laid back... thats why she gets to come to work with me all the time. But when she gets to play with her brother 4 month old 45lb yellow lab outside then she can get pretty wound up. Mostly she just sits in my lap and gives kisses. |

Teddy is a pretty calm yorkie - loves to cuddle, snuggles up to Mom Dad and Uncle Ryan ... very lovely. However, when we bring him to Curt's parents house he gets to play with Tucker, the slightly older and much larger yorkie, and they fight and play like little wolves! It can be a task to calm them down when they're together. :) |
Wild Child! STEDMAN..............is ANYTHING, but CALM!!! lol  He will dirve you bonkers sometimes!! But bonkers in a good way lol :p The only time Stedman is calm is when he is sleeping!! He is constantly running, barking, jumping up on the couch, jumping up on the window and looking outside, attacking the cat, begging to go outside, chewing the heck out of his toys or his Bully Stick, standing up in front of me doing tricks trying to get a treat...OMG it never ends!!! |
Ha-ha! Muffin was my little firebrand, but Kacee is a calm little girl, except when she's playing and running!:D |
2 Calm ones! Well I consider myself very Lucky! I have a male almost 3 yrs. old and a female almost 2 yrs. old and both are very calm & relaxed 99 percent of the time and that 1 percent is when someone comes over and rings the doorbell! For the most part one is always on my lap and the other is on my feet both asleep. Even @ the Dog Park, I always get compliments b/c they say most Yorkie's are hyper, nipping and barking, besides being high maintenance. I do my best to make sure they behave everywhere we go and make it a point to set an example. I do alot of Yorkie & YT. Promotion/Marketing, especially @ Petsmart and the Vet. Office where there is the highest ratio of mis- informed Public! I can say that 9 out of every 10 Yorkie's we meet are hyper and un-socialized (admitted by their Owners not me) |
Gypsy is a calm baby. She would rather sleep beside me or in my lap then anything else. My dtr's yorkie is the complete opposite. Typical wild child. When he is over, Gypsy just sits in our laps watching him run around. Gypsy is perfect for me. |
Yorkie's are supposed to be calm! They're terriers!!! |
So far, Jake is pretty calm and loves to cuddle or sit on my lap. But, get him started with playing, and he is anything BUT calm!:D |
My Spencer must be an exception too. He's so calm and laid back. He'll just sit there and look at me when I come in or when he sees me get his treats. He sits, ever so patiently, waiting for me. It's too cute. He is clumbsy too...he'll be running and looking to the side....then **BAM** he'll run into the wall....it's something to see...lol. Thankfully he's never gotten hurt.;) I agree, it just depends on the dog. |
Both my dogs are calm - they certainly have their times when they want to run around outside and play -- or run around the house and drive me crazy - but basically, they are pretty laid back most of the time. I think they take after me....... Carol Jean |
chester is pretty mellow, except for if he hears something of someone comes to the door. I have to drag his butt out from under the covers most of the time. |
Laid back? that's crazy. I've heard that toobut the only time my puppy is calm is when is sleeping. he is definately a WILD CHILD!!! |
