Flea Collars My Vet said Sadie did not need any monthly flea treatment as we don't have that problem where I live. Today I was brushing and I think I found a dead flea. She has been itching around her ears, and her ears look fine. Is it safe to use a flea collar on her, or is their skin too delicate? I guess this just depends on the dog's skin. I just bought her a cute fake diamond collar, and there is nothing cute about the flea collars, but I could put the fancy one back on her when I am taking her out to show her off. :) Comments? Kate |
colllar Flea collars are so toxic to Yorkies..I nearly lost one little girl some years ago from another chewing on it, then another got a collar caught in her lower jaw, she nearly died..both Yorkies were so sick. I didn't realize people still used them. A monthly Heartworm pill, with flea control is ideal..not only prevents heartworms, but ear mites, ticks and fleas... |
Do not use flea collars. There is always the chance that they may get it off and chew it, not to mention that they are full of poison! There are other safer ways to control fleas nowadays...Theresa & The Boys |
Yeah, flea collars are a no-no. For my girls, I treat them monthly with frontline (check with your vet for the correct dosage for her size) and heartguard. We have a real problem with fleas in our area and this does the trick... |
I use Revolution...it's designed for small dogs and puppies....and it does fleas, ticks, heartworms, ear mites, worms,.....everything....i don't think it's really that expenisive....i paid like $75 for 7 monnths worth...and i have never seen a flea or tick on baby...plus she had a heartworm test this year and it was negative... so it seems to be doing a great job! |

flea solutions Hello! I have recently had similar problems so I can share with you the solution that worked for me. My vet also told me not to worry about flea treatment since we live in the city...boy was he wrong. As soon as the weather turned nice we started going for walks around our neighborhood (strictly on the sidewalk) and Syd managed to pick up the worst case of fleas I have ever seen. I bought some Frontline...and she seemed to improve...but not completely. Anyway to make a long story short...we now use Frontline once a month, bathe weekly with flea and tick shampoo, and monthly I treat my carpet and furnature with Raid Flea and Tick killer. (by the way the Raid is safe if you do one room at a time and keep them out of the room for about 5 hours after spraying, or until the smell goes away.) Even with all of this she still gets an ocassional flea that lives for a few hours before this arsanal of killers gets to it. Good luck with your flea problem |
People...remember, we are in flea/tick season...so please do something, i recoomend frontline but even a flea shampoo will help... |

Wow, thanks everyone for your replies. I just put a flea collar on Sadie two hours ago. I think I will cut in up, and tape it underneath dressers, etc., that she cannot get to. Where did you buy Frontline? Is it a Walmart product, or do I need a prescription? Thanks. Kate Quote:

I get revolution at my vets office.....however i did a quick search online and found it available on many different sites. Here are just a few. But the stuff that you can buy at Walmart that is a cheaper version of the same thing usually doesn't work as well, although it depends on the dog. The only place where there is never a flea problem would be either the North or South Pole. Wherever you have other 4 legged critters, you will have a flea problem; so, even in themiddle of the largest city you have fleas from vermin, strays and untreated domestic animals.. |
