Hepl please Im exhausted Royce has separation anxiety he cries like crazy whenever i leave the apartment I tried everythingwith no results .i got a complaint from my neighbor so I hired a dog behaviorist 3 weeks ago she gave me techniquesto practice with Royce and desensetize him ..she told me once he can handle being alone for half an hour than he is fine ...during my pratice departures and after several tentatives each day he can manage to stay calm for half an hour but when i leave in the morning he still baks and cries when i told her that he is still doing that she said you have tp practice everyday being outside for an hour and then increase it to an hour ...yesterday royce was fine for half an hour and today when i started doing his exercises he started barking non stop 10 seconds after I left ..this is becomoing very exhausting and stressful for me I cant sleep at nignt anymore I'm always scared that I will find a letter saying that I have to leave my apartment because of Royce ...What should i do please ? Today was feelingso tired and depressed couldn't leave my bed  |

The only other thing I could think of was to put a cd player close to his crate and play mellow music, something real soothing. |
I have no advice, just wishing you good luck! |
I don't have much advice to offer but it sounds like you are headed in the right direction. Training dogs with seperation anxiety takes alot of time, it is not an fast or easy thing to fix. Keep up with the practice and training and keep extending the time a little bit at a time. I am not sure I would go from a half an hour to an hour. I would probably go from a half hour to forty five minutes and then an hour. And when you come back, do not make it a big deal. Don't pet, talk, or acknowledge your dog until you have been in the house for about 15 minutes. After that you can pet them, play with them, etc. I know it is not the easiest thing to do, the first thing you usually want to do when you come home is to pet, hug, play with your dog. But if you pet them, talk to them, play with them right away it will only make your coming home more dramatic which will make your leaving even more dramatic. With mine I will give them treats, I will either put the treats in their pen/crate or around the house if the are allowed to roam the house. I give them treats, chews and fix a kong with soft dog food and treats in it. I also leave the tv on and some soothing music on as well. Dogs pick up on things really fast even our routines. We usually have a routine when we are leaving even though we don't notice it. For example, we will put a coat on, shoes on, grab a purse or the keys, etc. They will pick up on this routine and will get stressed out even more because they know what is coming and that you will be gone for awhile. So try mixing it up. Put your shoes and walk around the house in them. Grab your keys and walk with them. Keep up with the training, I am sure after some time things will all work out!!! |
I've never had this problem but, Kizzy starts barking when we leave to go some place too, but she is usually asleep when we get back. have you thought of letting a tape run and record her while your at work and just see how much she actually cries? She may only be doing this when you first leave. That way you'll know if she cries most of the day or just takes a spell or so aday and you might be worrying un necessarily. At least if you find she isnt crying all that much or all that loud you would know and you might even get more sleep. I think I would try it just to see for myself. |

I really like Missy's advice to leave a recording of your voice reading. This is a link with a lot of advice: http://www.dogdoright.com/canine-seperation-anxiety.htm |
Forgive me if this has been asked of you before..... Do you walk Royce before you go?? I mean really walk him?? Like 20 to 30 mins of brisk (brisk for him) walking?? If not.... DO! he needs it! Wear him out! After a major drain of his energy he is more likely to go with the flow... and he really needs the walks... Do the same at night... twice a day.. walk for 20 to 30 mins... really make him work... He's a dog, he'll be thrilled to be out walking with you!!! And he won't be so desperate for you to stay with him... he will have had his fill... lol I hope this helps... its not an instant fix... But It works... It worked with Pixie... She doesnt let out a single whine in protest when I leave now... And if you search the posts... you'll find that she is... was the worst barker EVER! I actually thought about debarking! Shhhhhhh don't tell anybody that... But I was seriously down to my last nerve and she was jumping up and down on it!!! but as soon as I started redirecting her energy elsewhere... it stopped... not 100% at first, but it stopped!!! And I think that you will see a marked improvement!!! If your pup is bigger than my girl... walk him faster or longer, or both! But wear him out!!! Don't leave an ounce of that nervous energy left in him.. Or he'll freak out all day... It was not that Pixie missed me.... It was nice to say that she did... cause it made me feel good... But she was just totally board and had way to much pent up energy! I am so flippen excited about this book I am reading... and I suggest you read it... Cause its totally confirming what I did with Pixie... And I feel so good about it!! I thought I was being a total B*tch with Pixie... Till I read this book!!! Its the Dog whisperers book.. Cezars Way... Get it! It will give you a totally new insight to the exact problems your dealing with... and it'll save you serious cash with the person your working with.... It sounds like they are using child psychology on a dog..... what you need is dog psychology! lol Check it out!!! |
It sounds like you are on the right track. Have you considered doggie day care for 2 or 3 days per week? |

Believe it or not i bought Cesar's way last week and already finished reading it . As for exercise I walk Royce is the morning before I go to work for half an hour and i walk him for half an hour when I get home from work ..he is 4 pounds and I dont know if half an hour before going to work is enough or not i think I will increase it to 45 minutes in the morning and see the results but im concerned i line in montreal canada wither is coming and I wont be avle to walk royce for that long especially on very cold days ie :-20 days . i loved cesar's book and im following his advice exercise, food affection ... I stopped treating Royce as a baby and I set limit and boundaries at home .... |
