Custom made Yorkieproof gate and his sleeping pics. 3 Attachment(s) Well we had a shelf that we were using as a gate in our family room so Cookie wouldnt jump out. He's strong enough to jump it now! lol So my hubby went to Home Depot and we bought the lattice gate and he made this really cool gate with a latch on it so it can swing open or stay locked.I took a picture so you can see how tiny Cookie looks next to it lol. I also took pictures of him sleeping on my bed. As soon as he heard the beep of the camera he opened his eyes! So you'll see the cute drowsy eyes Genie |
The pictures are adorable! Looks just like my Schatzie. What a great idea about the homemade gate!! We used a playpen for Schatzie until last week as she too has learned to "jump" out of it. The way our house is built I do not have a room (tiled) that I can confine her too. So, we are stuck with her kennel. I would like to get one of those exersize pens but I am afraid she will just "jump" out of that also. Id hate to spend the money for something she will learn how to climb out of, kinda frustrating. |
How old is Schatzie ? I have Cookie confined to the family which is big enough for him its almsot 20ft long by like 14 ft wide. This area is rug also. So I have wee pad trained him. He got the hang of it in like 2 weeks but there were still accidents. Now that its been a little over two months there are no more accidents in this room. If I take him out he will get lost and pee lol. Genie |
Schatzie was 5 months old last week. (21 weeks this coming Tuesday) She seemed to be doing great on the potty pads until about 2-3 weeks ago. She seems to only now like to got potty outside. This will be real interesting once winter sets in. I have potty pads laid on the floor in two of our rooms which she spends the most time in. She just stopped using them?? Last week she pottied/pooped on the carpet and I know she knows this is not what we want of her. I wish she would have atleast gone to the door so I would have had an idea. Boye is she stubborn I guess? I would just love to "trust" her alone in the house. I realize that will come at a much more mature date for her, and not to expect anything too soon. I've raised puppies so many times in my life but this is my first Yorkie. ( I will never have another breed again, absolutley love her and this breed!!) I am wondering if she has chosen the outside area to do her business at due to our Schnauzer, Annabelle. As she goes outside. So, for now we head "outdoors" many many many times a day...She will be in for a big surprise when we get rain, ha ha. |
Great handyjob by your husband, cookie2! Just wait'll the little high jumper learns to jump that gate! :P |
I wonder what's the highest he will jump! lol The gate is 36 inches tall. I hope by then he can be trusted in the whole house. I am thinking of training him to go outside. Right now he is used to doing on the pad. The reason why is because he comes to work with me and I cant walk him outside every time. Besides the front is just plain sidewalk and no grass . Maybe when he can hold his little bladder for at least 8-9 hrs and he can stay at home ! Right now he is being great about controlling his bladder for the night. So I dont wake up to see a wet spot. He's sleeping with me and pushes his back against me! No matter how many times I move him a few inches away ,he rolls over and plops down against my back or stomache lol. Man I cant wait until I get a Kingsize bed! Genie |
Heheh, Genie! Yeah, they can hold their bladder a bit, but try to let him out every few hours, because it can't be good to let them hold it for THAT long everyday. We leave Yoda's peepee pad indoors when we go out. That's cool you can take him to work with you everyday. Yorkies must love to sleep right next to us because that's the way it was when they were just born. It's like they love their little 'cave' next to Mommy, where they feel safe and secure and can sleep throughout the night. I dunno about the king-size bed, Genie, we have one, and Yoda monopolizes it! We're lucky to be sleeping on his bed! :P |
Nice gate Genie! I haven't thought about making one out of the plastic lattice, it looks really nice, part of the house. Right now I still use the baby gate but they are a pain to put up all the time. And as far as a king size bed is concerned, like FastEddie said, they somehow develope into Great Danes when they are sleeping with you, never enough room :) ...Theresa |
Genie, the gate is a GREAT idea!! When we have to confine Toto we have an X-pen in a corner of the dining room where the floor is tiled. The only time we don't let her have free access to most of the house is on rare occasions when we have to leave her alone. Toto isn't left alone in there for more than 1-2 hours [I know it's much more painful for us than it is for her! :) ] and even though her "palace" has everything she could possibly need or want ... it appears that when we are gone all she has done is curl up and nap! She doesn't go potty or eat the whole time we are out ... but when we get back she is so excited ... she immediately pee pees on her pad and grabs a snack and a drink and zips out the X-pen gate as soon as we open it!! Sleeping? Haven't slept on my left side for over a year! Toto insists on curling up in front of me and has to have her head on a pillow .... quite the "little princess"! If I lie on my left side she climbs over to curl up in front of me and I am so terrified that she will fall off ... I sleep on my right side! :( No wonder I have insomnia!! ;) |
Toto's Mom, how tall is the x-pen you use for Toto? I would really like to purchase one but I need to make sure it is tall enough so she wont jump or climb out. I swear she has springs on the bottom of those feet of hers!! :p |

He is so cute sleeping on the bed. I have a baby gate for charlie he stays in the kitchen while I am at work all day and he sleeps in the bed with me at night. :) |
Cookie2: He is soo cute in "his" bed...LOL! ;) I love how they curl up when they sleep. Kudos to your husband for the gate...looks really great. |
Toto's Mom - Well I ended up getting yesterday a 36" wired cage kennel. It's real nice, has a nice finish on the cage but the best thing is it has a roof on it so Schatzie has not an option to jump out. She is quite my little escape artist so I was so afraid to buy an x-pen even if it was real tall. I have this funny feeling she would just scale it to the top then jump. It's the size for a large dog. So she has one end to play/sleep in the other with potty pads laid down for her business to be done. Has room for food/water dishes etc and she seems fine with it. Of course any kennel she'd rather not be in but for those times when I can't watch her this will keep her safe. |
Good job, Sheryl! That sounds like it will do a great job! If Toto were a "jumper" I would do something like that but since she doesn't try to excape, the 24" works great for her. If it occurs to her that she can jump that high ... then we will definitely do that!! :) The main thing is that she has room for all her things ... wee wee pad, food/water, little bed and toys. Sounds like the one you got is perfect! Toto is content when we have to leave her but I don't think she will ever be happy with it! The main thing is our peace of mind and that we have done everything in our power to make sure they are safe and happy!! ;) |
