Any ideas for Reece's problem?? Today Reece was home alone in the kitchen with his food and water and some toys and his bed...we came home to diareah (sp) all over the floor, none on the pee pads of course. After we scrubbed and sanitized and cleaned up Reece we went for a car ride (which both my babies love) Reece ate well, drank lots of water..pottied at various parks and played with his new toy. We havent changed his food, which he eats well...but just a little while ago...he had the runs again in the kitchen. He had pretty solid BM's while we were out but not now?? I am trying to think if we gave him a treat or anything to cause this...but I dont think we did? Any ideas of what will help him or what might cause them? He is 10 weeks old today (Saturday) and seems to be doing quite well up to this point.. Thanks, Dawn |
He culd just have intestinal uset but it is best to take them to the vet especially when they are young and you dont know if it could be something like coccidia. The Vet will give him meds to clear the diahrea right up |
What do you clean the floor with? If it's a caustic product it could cause the problem. If I'm cleaning a floor where I'm going to leave my babies for any length of time I use vinegar in water. You can use baking soda and water too. |
I think I would get a fecal test done. I agree with Chaci most likely it is a problem that a vet can clear up - coccidia, giardia, worms, etc. Rice is good at firming up stools and Pedialyte is good at restoring the electrolytes lost in diarrhea while your waiting, but if your vet is open on Saturdays I would definitely bring down a sample. You could also try giving yogurt (good bacteria to overcome any bad bacteria in the intestinal tract), but the lactose could cause diarrhea so I prefer to give lactobili sp? (live bacteria cultures) powder which you can buy in health food stores. It should need refrigeration to be a good product. All of my suggestions, will not overcome a need for antibiotics if it is a parasite, but it will help if for some reason you have to wait until Monday. |
I also use vinigar and water... Dawn |
Just called the vet..not open till Monday but I will make him an appointment asap...thanks for your advice!! Dawn |
In the meantime, adding a bit of cooked rice to his food should firm him up. |
Should I use brown rice?? Dawn |
White rice has less bran and is, therefore, more constipating. |
White or brown is fine, either one. I always use white, but don't know what the difference would be. |
Thanks you guys...maybe I will make some chinese for supper tonight hehe Reece can have some with us (the rice only of course lol) Dawn |
Here's a link to a site comparing white and brown rice. It doesn't mention using for diarrhea specifically, but it does say the brown has more fiber and is a lot healthier. After reading this, I would go with brown. http://www.drlam.com/opinion/print/b...white_rice.htm |

Sorry, here's another link - it agrees with First Yorkie - white rice. It says to only give white rice for 24 hours and then 1/2 food and 1/2 rice the next 24 hours (I would stick with boiled chicken as the food). It also says canned pumpkin is a wonder fruit for helping with diarrhea (and constipation). http://www.nlga-mn.org/diarrhea.pdf#search='white%20rice% 20diarrhea' |
