Saw a full grown-looking 8 week old yorkie today What the heck were they selling? I went into this puppy store last weekend and they told me to come back today to see if they had yorkies. Well they did, supposedly. Now I've never seen a yorkie pup in real life, but I've done enough research to know what they should look like. So when I came up to this cute, but 5-7inch tall 10 lb. Yorkie pup I knew something was wrong. It also either had thin hair or silverish looking hair on its head. Aren't they supposed to be brown/black as pups? They even assured me that it was purebred and 8 WEEKS OLD! It was cute, but something was odd. They just said it was "big." Gotta love a horribly carried out scam...it was $200 cheaper. |
The silver on it's head is normal. It's starting to change colors and they will continue up to 2 years of age. That is a very tall and heavy yorkie, though...especially at 8 weeks of age! |

Thanks for the reply! I couldn't remember which colors come out when. I just remembered that yorkies being certain colors too early can be bad... |

I've heard about pet stores doing it. They have puppies that are akc reg., so when in due to neglect one of the pupies at the store dies, they keep his akc papers and transfer it to other puppy( sometimes sick or non full breed). YEAH I believe it's illegal!!!The pet stores are a big SCAM overall. Just save yourself a heartbrake and don't go there anymore. You are just going to be annoyed whith what you'll see. |

just something to think bout :aimeeyork Chewy is from a pet shop and he is doing great! My best friends Yorkie is a few years old and has never been sick yet... doing great! I know how people feel about pet shops but I have heard alot about people buying from a breeder that they were told was good... only to find out that they were not. I met a woman today who's dog was supposed to be a toy breed, and her dog is huge... Like 30 pounds! (Not a yorkie) they don't even have papers on this dog. the papers they got were not real or something! I know you have to do your home work to find a really good breeder. But not every dog that comes from a pet store is in horrible health. i think the worst thing is that you are helping the puppy mills stay open. But don't these poor dogs need a home too? I can look at this like I saved him and he is our baby and we love him. After everything I have read and heard I would have a hard time trusting a pet store or a breeder... Unless you know the breeder personally how can any one KNOW they are not being lied to? </IMG> |
You're lucky your dog is healthy and I'm sure that many people do have healthy dogs from Pet Shops too. But the point is as long as people buy their dogs from stores like that the Puppy millers and Puppy Brokers will stay in business. These dogs are treated like livestock or worse. There are many sites on the internet that will show you just how bad it is. Pet stores make it too easy for people to go with the cute factor and buy a puppy on impulse while they are at the Mall. They just don't know the conditions their puppy came from and where their parents are most likely still enduring a life of misery. |
2 Attachment(s) trust me I have heard it all... I didn't know what a puppy mill was... I wanted a Yorkie and myhusband made the decision on the spot. i had been wanting one for while but my husbad didn't want any more dogs... it took less then 10 min for him to want this one. He would never have gone to a breeder... I don't promote puppy mills... but I would do it all over again to save this little baby, the dogs in the pet shops should not sit there with no homes. You don't know alot about history of resque dogs, but people still want to save them! I can't say I would never buy a puppy from a pet store again... maybe i will some day. I would rather find a breeder that I could trust... but I won't stop myself from following my heart... |
Wow, 10 lbs, and 8 weeks old??? I smell chit here, and its not the dogs chit. Check out the thread on "how much does you puppy weigh". |
No body faults you for buying your puppy. In an ideal world puppy mills wouldn't exist and the second best thing would be for people to boycott pet shops that sell dogs totally and put them out of business. There will never be a shortage of dogs that need rescuing. |
Oh goodness, I wonder how big that would end up being. Doesn't sound like a purebred yorkie does it. |
Every week I visit the mall pet store to look at what they have in stock. I would NEVER consider buying a pet there but it is interesting to see when they have yorkies how sad and sick they look. Moreover, I always ask the price and 2 weeks ago a 8 week old one was 2,800! |

But not that I think of it, a few years ago I WANTED a pet store dog for all of the reasons people tell me not to get one. I'd rather get one(even if it gets sick) and give it a good life even if its only for a year or two. Its not its fault some evil people had him created under bad circumstances. That'd be like some people that dont adopt children from countries that they've heard may have issues, or dont take babies with medical conditions or deformaties(for lack of a better word). I absolutely understand not getting one b/c you dont want to go through the heartbreak, and dealing with issues they may have will be time consuming/expensive, which brings me to another thing that bothers me. Us normal everyday people should have the "perfect" yorkies from breeders without medical conditions etc. But you always see highly rich celebs with small dogs that they probably paid 3x what we did just to have them as accessories. Those people should be the ones trying to help the pet store dogs/abused dogs b/c they can afford to care for that kind of situation. I guess that's just in a perfect world. Anyway, i'm not attacking anyone, just thinking outloud. I guess its just personal since If I was adopted i'd probably be passed around b/c of things I dealt with at the beginnig of life, only to turn out to be an absolutely normal adult. I wasn't adopted, or given up for adoption...but I could still give back to the furballs! :animal-pa |
adopted It is all about the "green"...no buyers, no sellers, end of puppyfarms..but it will not happen in my life time. |
I guess I get upset when people assume that all pet store puppies are sick or will get sick. I know a few people with pet store dogs and non of their dogs got sick. they have these babies as family pets for many years. At the pet shop we have here, the dogs do not look sick. They seem very hand friendly, playful and clean. I also know people who went to breeders and got puppies who were sick... or that had problems later... I get the feeling that some people feel like dogs that come from pet stores are not as good in some way... I don't believe any one dog is better then another...some get sick and some don't. Some die and some get better. They all deserve good homes for as long as they have. I hope Chewy stays healthy, but if he doesn't I'll love him any way and I'll take the best care of him I can... I just wish people would understand that what they see in one pet store is not the same every where...and unless i go to the place that Chewy came from I will never know if it was clean or dirty or a kennel that may have been half way decent or some horrible puppy mill....he deserves love no matter what.:animal-pa |
