Am I Being Paranoid?? Yesterday I took Nikko for his annual checkup and rabies/parvo boosters. While there the vet brought up neutering again, since I have been procrastinating about this so long. Nikko is 1 1/2 years old and I realize the neutering is important since we are not planning to breed him, but I have been scared to put him under. Anyway, I decided since she brought it up, I would voice my concerns and see what she said. I told her I was concerned about the anesthesia and she said it was rare that dogs die from the anesthesia and usually those that were affected, it was because of other underlying conditions that weren't detected before. My next question was "do you do blood work before the procedure?" and she said none was necessary. HUH? How do you know if the dog had an underlying condition unless you check his blood before you cut him open? Then I asked her about collapsing trachea and how I was concerned that the tube might hurt his throat. She said and I quote "for those with collapsing trachea, the tube is their best friend. They have never breathed better." HUH again? I thought tubes made collapsing tracheas even worse. After all this she warned me about testicular and prostate cancer and advised me to go through with the neutering. I want to be a responsible pet owner but I was not comfortable enough with this lady's casual attitude about the procedure. I know she does tons of these a week and they are no big deal to her, but this is my baby and I want to make sure that he is going to be ok. Sorry for the long rant but am I being paranoid and making too much of this? Should I take Nikko elsewhere? |
I would get him neutered but I would take him somewhere that does the blood work first. My Vet does that bloodwork every annual visit |
I can TOTALLY relate to your concerns. I am very paranoid about neutering Georgie. Our vet is great and one of the other vets in the office told me that this particular vet would be the best choice since I am so paranoid about the procedure. I would go somewhere where you feel comfortable. It's hard enough to get it done you don't want to worry yourself sick about it. Trust me I know Georgie is 14 months and I haven't had it done. I have had literally 6 appts. that I cancel because I am so nervous. I know everyone else says it's not a big deal and I am sure they are right, but I have to get up the courage to get it done. Good luck with whatever you decide and please keep us posted. |
You are not being paranoid. My vet has always suggested doing blood work before surgury. I do think you should find another vet and get a second opinion on the tube thing. I don't know anything about that but I would definatly find a vet that does the blood work first. |
If you are not trusting this vet go with your gut and maybe talk to another vet about it...see how your feeling with someone new...maybe you'll feel more comfortable with someone else....I finally had to make Ladys spay appt. shes getting it done next week and I'm a nervous wreck just thinking about it.. As for the blood work, I had asked my vet about it too and she said they normally do not do it, but a lot of people request it, so I had her blood taken last week when I was there. I know exactly how you feel, i hate knowing that Ladys gonna have to go under, on top of everything the vet is trying to tell me she has to stay overnight, and no one will be there, I'm calling the vet tomorrow and telling her that Ladys IS coming home that night, no way am I going to leave her somewhere unattended. |

Now as far as tubing on collapsed trachea, does your puppy have this problem. They do use different size tubing and if they are made aware of the problem, special procedures are taken. I'd find another vet that made you feel comfortable. I have two different vets for my brood. One is close to home and used for normal type visits. The other I drive 26 miles to see. He's my breeder's vet and very familiar with her line and is a yorkie specialist. |

I wish they had a vet here that is a Yorkie specialist I would love that. I am always worried that my vet isn't as familiar with smaller breed dogs. |
If you arent' comfortable with you vet, than seek out another. But, I believe, relatively seeking, neutering is a pretty safe surgery. (of course, there is always a risk). Good luck whatever you do, and keep us posted. |
Thank you all for your reassurances. I just don't want to make the wrong decision. I think she was trying to make light of this procedure so that I would see how simple and ordinary it is. She told me he would be done in the morning and I could pick him up later in the day. She also gave me an estimate based on his weight and said it would run me about $300, including some baby teeth that need to come out. As for the tubing, Nikko does not have collapsed trachea but I thought I have heard that the tubes can hurt their throats if they use one that is too big. I guess I just wanted to cover all the angles. I think I will go through with it, mostly because I know it is the right thing to do, but I am not sure I want to do it there. |
You might want to find out who does insert the tube. A vet tech or the vet? I've read of some vet techs damaging the trachea because they used too big of tubes ramming them down their throats. IOW, they didn't know what they were doing. I don't want to scare you. This is just something that I think needs to be considered. I have confidence in my vet. She has yorkies and raises a few occasionally. Good luck. |
I have kept dogs and all types of creatures for over 30 years, I have dealt with tons of vets. This is the type of vet that makes me nervous. He might be nice, or reasonable, or good with the critters but that isn't enough. I would never put any critter under without blood work. NEVER! That is not paranoia just being a responsible mom! I have a pretty good vet now. He's not in my outstanding list but only 2 were. He is now 30 minutes from me, but buying his own practice. He'll be an hour from me. I will still go to him for all serious matters.... Surgeries etc. But stay at the original practice for shots etc. Go wherever you need to. It is your job to protect your baby. If you have concerns..... RUN! And to Jager that won't leave her baby overnight... I'm with you on that! I have had that argument with more than one vet. If they don't see it my way I am gone. I have the number of the ER vet if I need it, car is gassed and ready to go. I cannot understand that line of thinking to leave them alone all night and think they are safer. Ask your vet if they can spay your baby first and release her just before closing. Just be sure you feel ready for any issue that can arise. Good luck to both of you! Lin..... 49 hours to new baby!! |
Piccolo goes for neutering this month and my vet wouldn't do it without blood work |

Thank you....thats exatly what I plan on doing...if there was a problem, the emergency clinic is less then 15 minutes from me I'll be able to get her there..if shes at that place alone and something happens then what...no way its she gonna stay overnight...i am 100% against this....and if they wont let me then she will not be getting spayed on thursday.... |

If I had to let her stay overnight....I'd probably get arrested for trespassing cause I'd be at that place afterhours trying to look in the window to check up on her.....I am not comfortable with leaving her....hopefully the vet will understand and let me take her home, cause I'd hate to find a new vet...i do like this one... |
